So whatis the real purpose of "racing" shoes?

Can you not press the gas pedal just as fast and hard wearing Nike's??? Someone please tell me the advantages here.... and yes I already know that most have Nomex as a safety precaution, so let's skip that part!

I haven't ever used them either... From what i understand though is that the soles are a lot softer allowing you to feel the pedals better and not stomp on the brakes. Why not post to the RMSolo list? There are a few people that use them for autocrossing, they may have a better answer.

They also seem to be uniformly minimalist across the board, perhaps so people with bigass feet like me can hotshoe in a smaller footbox? As in a most vintage sportscars?

That is an angle I hadn't thought of, probably because I have small feet..  :P

They are nomex lined to be fire resistant - most important.

If you ever wore wrestling shoes, most race shoes are like that.  No cushion AT ALL so that what your foot does is communicated directly to the pedal and there is no cushioning to dampen what the pedals are "telling" your feet.

I have a set I used in formula car stuff, and I have a set of the Piloti street/driving shoes that I really like.  They are a good compromise, as they have some cushion, but not too much.
