Knowing where you knock when you tune a car for optimum driving is pretty key to not blowing it up.

i just use my ear.  when i hear the motor start pinging i back out of it.  i've never heard the jetta ping but my tacoma does it every once in a while (usually when i'm a cheap ass and put 85 octane in it).
