Clutch installer suggestions?
« on: February 20, 2007, 01:42:44 PM »

Ok guys, it appears my little surging/acceleration problem is due to a bad clutch.  At least according to Audi, and like 3 other people i've talked to.  Consequently i'm going to be needing that done soon.  I figure since i basically hosed this one in ~25k miles, i am going to go with an RS4 clutch kit.  Does anyone have any suggestions on where to get it done?  Audi wanted ~2200 with the parts and labor, which is off the fucking rockers, but anyways.  I've worked with Elite Auto before, they seem to know what they're doing, and i'm always seeing XKR's and Astons and shit out front of it, so at least some people trust them with euro cars.  Havent checked with them yet, wanted to get some of your opinions.

Also, im thinking about picking up a pair of diverters just for good measure, i was curious how difficult they are to install, and/or if anyone who has done it before would be willing to help me out with it if i buy them.

B5 S4.

Call German Motorsports for the fun of it.  Those guys are all Audi nuts and work on them constantly.  I was considering trusting them with my A4 clutch before opting to do it myself.

Lance, he's correct.  It's an easy job... relative to an A4.  ;-)

yes.  I do my own work... and stunts.  I'm not as mechanically retarded as I look.  I used to spent a lot of time under my cars back when I actually had a garage... but that has changed.

Rofl, well, Elite auto wants ~1050 in labor to do it.  This is starting to make my head explode, guess i'll call German Motorsports next.

./grumble.

And yes on the S4 the DV's are up top.

Try "719 wrenching weekend... that might extend into the weekday."  :P  My clutch was the hardest job I ever did on a car... and it wasn't the install, it was getting the damn tranny input shaft to properly mate with two sets of splines and the pilot bearing.  Serious, it was not a fun install and I had all the tools for the job.

Yeah, well, of course id be down for it, but i dont have any tools etc, nor a driveway.  So yeah i'd pretty much be leeching off of someone else, which is why i dont usually bring that up unless its something smallish, like DV's.

But, if anyone is comfortable doing it, etc, i would be more than happy to provide eatage and beer for the job.

Also, got ahold of German Motorsports, 1100 in labor.

Everyone is telling me its a pretty intense job, even over and above an A4, so, yeah.  I guess im probably gonna just need to bite the bullet.

Well i'm fairly inept when it comes to repairs on cars, or generally anything that has tight spaces.  Worked on the jeep a few times, suspension stuff, but thats a little different ya know.

You could try the guy who does all my work on my Jetta. He is a small business but he does amazing work. He is the one that just got done doing my exaust and when I had to get my clutch replaced he only chaged me about $420 for labor(I provided the parts) and he did it in about 10 hours. The name of his business is Auto Pro service and repair, His name is John Hopper and the number is (719)573-1800.

He should be able to give you an estimate over the phone.(got me my estimate in about 20 minutes)

I personally stay away from any work on a car that would require laying on my back.  From all of my mechanic friends/co-workers I've always been able to bum some lift time for stuff like that.  I'll see what old strings that I have left to pull.  But it may be in Denver...

With all the parts on hand and a few helping hands I can do a clutch in a full day if I start early enough... The more you have done it the quicker and easier it becomes..

now you ask why has mine been taking months? well its the whole parts on hand part that is the problem... took me about 4 hours to drop the tranny on my own.

My first clutch job ever when I was 18 took me a full week, my second clutch job took me a weekend when I was 21.. and if would of had all the parts on hand for my 3rd clutch job I could of had it back together within a day (im 25 now)

DIY clutch replacement is one of the most useful things you can learn to do to your car.. its not complicated, just time consuming and the knowledge you gain will save you thousands and thousands of dollars throughout yer lifetime..

That being said, my clutch should be here Friday, hopefully I'll get my new tranny back from yokust by then and my clutch job will finally wrap up this weekend... too bad I wont be able to go anywhere w/out axles..

If you decide to wrench it out I'll be more than happy to help providing I have some sort of transportation by then.. :-)

Well, i would be overjoyed if you guys are willing to help me out.  I was getting rdy to order the clutch kit, probably from ACHtuning.com.  Basically its the clutch, the pressure plate, and a throwout bearing?  Is that all the parts i need?  Also, i was concerned if we will need to resurface the flywheel or not?  Or is that one of those things we will only know when we get up under the car.

But yeah, i havent ordered any parts, but i'll put it in tonight if you guys let me know what i need.

here is the link

http://shop.achtuning.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=417

Edit: forgot to answer the question about timeframe.

Basically ASAP within reason, the clutch isnt like about to explode or anything, so if we need to schedule it 2 or 3 weeks or something out, thats fine.

I think it would be awesome if you can DIY, but everyone will say it is a nightmare, and it appears to be. I think those that have paid to have it done and have attempted to do it themselves and failed were more than happy to fork over the cash.

The DVs aren't terrible to do, but it is a bit tight in there and it does take longer than 3 minutes. Give yourself 30 minutes for your first time then about 20 minutes or less going forward. Make sure you either go after market or 710N don't talk to the Audi dealer and have them sucker you into the 710B at $70 a pop.

Lance,
You need a clutch alignment tool as well. Little plastic black round thing with splines on it and a big circle on the other side.

I have a high quality metal one that you guys can use.  It has the interchangeabl e heads that are specific to the application.  I just have to dig it out of my toolbox... which is buried deep in my storage unit.

If I have to do my clutch again, I'm paying someone to do it.  I'll do everything else myself, but not that job.  Not again.

Not trying to shoot any or all DIY hope out there, but I was talking with an audi tech (an old string) and he said this is a 15 hour job in the shop, with a lift...

But I don't hang out with him casually so he could just be spooning shit in my mouth.

Nah, i dont doubt it, Thats pretty much why i'm getting raped by the shops, they're all charging approx 15 hours of labor.  As to whether it really takes that long or not, who knows.  Like i said though, i would fully understand if any of you are not comfortable with and/or simply dont want to invest the time,  i wouldnt blame you at all.  Its obviously none of your responsibility or even obligations to help me out with that.  Given that, if anyone does help out with it, i would obviously be very happy ;-).

If you want an honest opinion about how long it really takes by a professional give Randy a call at Autobahn Premier Service, he wont bullshit you. I'm not saying you need to use him, but I stated in my earlier post that it is a pretty brutal job.

I am always for DIY if you can, and you can, but if you haven't done it, and no one else helping has either, I would not count on having it done in a weekend.

Yeah, there is no way i would ever do this on my own.  I own pretty much 0 tools, no jack's etc.  That, and i really kind of got turned off on working on cars after owning the jeep.  Anywhoo.
