New Tundra test
« on: January 10, 2007, 07:58:16 PM »

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/FullTests/articleId=119089?tid=edmunds.il.home.photopanel..1.*

Edmunds has scored the first test of a new Tundra, expected to turn the domestic market on it's ear.  From reading through the story, they've done a hell of a good job and really set the standard high.  If it had gone on sale by jan. 1st, you'd be looking at the new Truck of the Year instead of the Silverado.  But, it looks to be a sure winner of next year's contest.

Here are a few things mentioned in the above story about the new Tundra:

5.7L V-8 makes 381hp and 401lb-ft. on 87 octane

CrewMax option offers more rear seat legroom than the Ram Mega Cab

0-60 in 6.3sec (in a double cab 4x4 mind you)

Best in class 1/2 ton tow rating of 10,800lbs.

Best in class 4-piston brake calipers.

60-0 in 131ft (damn good for a nearly 2 ton truck)

I also found a story on Motor Trend about the plant in San Antonio where these are built.  They went about $500 million over budget, but it's quite impressive as well.

Well they had to do something after Nissan completely obliterated them with the Titan.

Wow - that thing is a beast.  I've always liked both the Titan and F-150 - but haven't ever really needed a full size truck.  If I needed one now I would definitely look at this one too.

Can't wait to see a comparison test between this, the ToTY (Silverado), Titan and F-150.

wow, some impressive numbers....

Quote

It all boils down to class-leading output, some 381 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and a whopping 401 pound-feet at 3,600 revs. And it does it all on 87 octane while meeting ULEV II emissions. For reference, Dodge's 5.7-liter Hemi produces just 345 hp, while GM's Vortec Max 6.0-liter V8 makes 367 hp. The Dodge and GM V8s both develop 375 lb-ft of torque. Nissan's 5.6-liter V8 makes only 317 hp and 385 lb-ft of torque.

Its good but I think the F150 will still hold its end up.  I think its funny that they beat the f150 w/ towing by 300 lbs...
I can't wait to see the comparison test either... there are some sweet trucks out there now

Im really curious what the price is going to be in MPG for the horse power of the new Tunra. Im not sure about the looks of the truck yet but it is nice Toy is making a huge leap of faith and offering so many cab and bed options. Lets just see what the MPG and the cost is going to be.

Nissan bumped the Titans HP and Torque ( to 385ft lbs and a 4x4 crew weights 5240) this year. Everyone agrees that Nissan under rated the Titans HP to keep insurance cost down and I have seen this in Dyno and 1/4 mile numbers. They are guys out there running 14s in stock 4x4 trucks (@sea level).

I agree.  I'm not digging the styling of any of the new trucks.  The new Tacomas are just starting to grow on me.  This one has a long ways to go.

I don't even want to go there.  I think Honda missed the boat on trying to create an appealing alternative truck.  They got their alternative truck, but they missed the "appealing" part.

The only thing I think that's going for the honda truck is the wish bone suspension all around. other then that they can keep it.

based on the story, the Tundra should be quite competitive int he MPG realm.  It was showing within 1 MPG of the Ford and GM offerings which are the current best in class.

But, we'll have to see how that translates to the real world once there are a number of these models on the road.

Okay, let's get something clear.  There is a BIG difference between capable and versatile.  The H1 may be very versatile because it has a very broad range of uses, but that does not mean it capable.  In the picture you posted, that is the last vehicle I'd pick for that situation.  H1's are prone to wheel lift.  Anytime you lift a wheel, you lose your stability, braking control, and throttle control.  Why are H1's so prone to wheel lift?  Because their suspension is designed around a low, stable CG while maximizing ground clearance.  The downfall is that they do not handle terrain that requires a great deal of articulation because while one wheel is forced up, it does not force the other wheel downward.  The radius of the arms have a lot to do with that too, but I'm not about to go into that.  That design makes them loose their "capable" status to almost all non-ignorant wheelers... except the guys who feel like they have something to compensate for.

Ummm.... Mitch, IRS stands for Independent Rear Suspension.  ;-)  i think you are assuming Nate was referring to a solid front axle.  He is not.

yeah i was talking about the rear suspension being independent.  i'm all about ifs trucks.  and yes a real truck as a solid rear axle.  you're right mitch, i wouldn't buy a honda truck either because it doesn't have the load capacity.  why doesn't it have the load capacity?  because it has independent rear suspension.  the ridgeline is an oversized car with a big open spot that honda calls a 'bed'.

pete:  hummers are piece of shit death traps.  granted they are rated as one ton trucks they don't hold up to well to any kind of significant load.  i've worked with hummers more times than i care to remember and from my experiences they're underpowered non-heavy duty pieces of shit that the dod shouldn't have ever bought.

Yes, I know I should of said independent not IRS. I had IRS on the brain. I agree all hummers are POS I have worked on too many of them in the desert also.
