Turbo Re-Assembly Qs...
« on: January 04, 2007, 09:14:04 AM »

OK, finally got my turbo exhaust housing back from the machine shop... long story, had to have the flange machined to mate with my exhaust mani (was a non-standard T3) and removal of a broken bolt

ok, the ID10T that last assembled the turbo used really crappy low grade bolts and bolts of the wrong length.  One bolt bottomed out and was over-torqed in.  Between snapping off the bolt in the housing and trying to get the rest of them out wihtout throwing the turbo across the room... I'd like to re-assemble it correctly...

What kind of bolts should I use... standard 8.8, hardened 12, stainless, high-alloy(where?)?
Should I use anti-sieze in case I ever need to take it apart again?
I have also been told that you should use locktite on the turbo flange studs... I personally think he's an idiot.  Can Locktite really handle the heat generated by a turbo?

Hey anyone know a distributor of ATP that might be able to give a discount on parts?

hehe, I never think about APR for anything but headstuds and manifold studs... I'm downloading their catalog to see what size bolts they have.  From what I can tell (my measuring tools are not inside the house) they are 6mmx1 and/or 8mmx1, in lengths of 10-12mm and 15-20mm (the ones that were installed, that one broke, were 25mm/1")...

I don't know if they're still in business but why don't you try to look up TEC(turbo engineering corporation) in Golden Colorado.

Holly is really helpfull but like I said I don't know if they're still in business coz I heard the main man passed away.

the rumor I heard was they closed the Golden shop after the owner died... dunno.  Guess I could contact ATP, maybe they have a "bolt kit" or can recomend specific products.  The APR stuff doesn't appear to be in the sizes (lengths) I need, and quite expensive for a bolt that is only going to exposed to high-heat and no actualy physical stresses.
