Ouch.  The removal is easy, but the install is a PITA.  When and where are you planning on doing this, Matt?  I have plans for Saturday, but I might be able to come by to lend a hand.  You will need an extra set of hands to lift the fat lady back into the car.  That process took me literally hours.

I have a clutch centering tool you can use too.

One set of hands and a garage floor! That's all ya need!  ;-) Floor jack helps too... haha

The hobby shop is nice. Lots of helpful tools there to make things easier.

I don't know.  Which base are you referring to?  I would need to be brought on since I do not have a military ID.

Tips:
bring about six plastic ziplock bags to put over the axle shafts where they mount to the tranny, both ends of the drive shaft (you will have to remove it), and the three output plates on the tranny where each of those bolt too.

Spray ALL the exhaust bolts with antirust as soon as you can.  Start today and spray 'em every day until Saturday.

You may need to modify (shorten) a wrench to you can remove the tranny to block bolts.  They are pretty difficult to get to.

it will take two people or a tranny lift to get it back into the car.  Aligning the tranny input shaft with the splines on the crank and pilot bearing is by far the most difficult part.  Everything else should run smooth... at least it did for me.

This is an Audi A4 were talking about here?  I have only done O2O and O2A and those are for the most part a one man lift from the garage floor right off your chest.

The quattro A4 manual tranny is definitely a two person lift.  And even then, after the forth lift lifting it, my buddy and my arms were feeling it.  If O2O and O2A are FWD VW trannys, I've lifted them before working at Best Foreign and there is a BIG difference in weight.

I believe he has a 2000 (?) A4 Quattro manual 1.8T.  it's blue, in case that matters.  :P

No problem.  Doing Rico's clutch I was lifting his trans and motor off the mounts from my floor.  I guess those beefcake suppliments paid off.  LOL

I don't want to work on an Audi.  Sorry.  (unless its 30 years old and very simple)

Why's that?  The entire removal and assembly process is actually pretty smooth.  It was go pretty fast with two or more people.  It's just the aligning of the tranny that is a PITA.

It's worth it!  Trust me.  just open the hood and spray from the top.  The turbo bolts and cat bolts are the most important.

That's what I use(d) and have no complaints.  When you can break exhaust bolts loose without breaking the bolt, life is MUCH easier.

Yes for sure.  I have used PB blaster for over 10 years on all kinds of stuff in factories then at home after I found some to buy locally.  I used it to get the body to pan bolts loose on my Baja bug in Ohio when I had it all stripped down and I didn't break one bolt or round any bolt heads.  I have been amazed at some of the stuff it will get loose.

I have to admit that Audi trans might actually go in and out easier than a VW one because VW decided to make the subframe stick out just enough to make the trans removal a M.F. when it could have obviously just came right out with a little thinking.

Oh, one more tip.  number the bolts that connect the tranny to the block and write down the order they were found in.  They are all similar lengths, but very specific to their position.  You'll see what I mean.  I just drew the face of the block, labeled each bolt hole with a number, labeled the appropriate bolt with the same number, and wrote in the orientation (points front or rear).
