Tire Source? (Odd sizes)
« on: April 04, 2005, 01:36:44 PM »

Anybody know if there's such a thing as a 215/40ZR16, 225/35ZR16, or a 225/40ZR16? What's a good size tire if I wanted some stretch on my Porsche wheels (obviously none of the above sizes)? Keep in mind the car will have a Clipper kit on it, and I'll probably cut as much of the metal arches underneath away as possible, to better facilitate a minimum of rubbing.

Also, just getting a guage for how you guys feel about the two looks in the poll. Either I could slam the car with stretched tires tucked inside the wheelwells, or I could go with a full width tire on my wheels and just lower it as much as possible. Not saying I'll go with the most popular choice, but it'll give me food for thought.

Oh shit, Picky, I thought yours were 225/40's this whole time. Unfortunately I seriously don't have money to buy tires right now.

215/40 is common, and usually your wheel size and offset decided for you if you want to stretch or not.  Stretching should only be used when it's needed for clearance.  If you stetch tires and don't have the stance, width or offset that requires it then you look like a silly pants..

Well, I see most Rabbits with wheels like mine with stretched tires. Are the really "hot" Rabbits running spacers in conjunction with their adapters?

Personally, I really think 225's on a Rabbit would look wide-as-hell, but probably pretty good if they were very low-profile.

You are working with your Porsche 928 wheels right?

If that's the case then you need to plan according on the thickness of the adapters when you buy them to determine what your final offset will be. (in reference to your question about spacers)

Taking into consideration that you are almost surely going to lower the car you almost must go with the stretched option.  You are running 16's on a MK1, which in itself will be a tight fit if the car is lowered.

Your wheels are 7 inches wide right?  If that's the case 225's will be way too much tire.

I measured the wheels and they are 8.5 inches wide.

So, after chatting with the wheel and tire guru, I came to the conclusion that a 215/40ZR16 would probably be ideal. So, Picky, what kind of tires are those that you've got?

How are you making that measurement.  That doesn't sound quite right.

Outside of the lip to outside of the other side, and I measured it again. It is precisely 8 1/4". Now the inside (at the bottom of the first dropoff) is 7" - is that the measurement that is referred to?

I'm pretty sure you have 7 inchers Josh..that is the most common size for that type of wheel.

Well, if the width inside of the lip at the bottom is the measurement, then these are 7" wide. There's an inch and quarter of taper there.

Shit, it's just getting narrower and narrower. By the time everybody's chimed in on this matter, I'll need 105's just to get some stretch...

from a purely performance point of view, if you're using adapters, i wouldn't do spacers - too much chunks of metal between the wheel and hubs. that's just my opinion and i'm usually more for performance than looks.

which 928 wheels do you have?

sweet! that'll be the coolest. i'm planning on running phonedials.

edit: i forgot to mention, look on the back of the wheel. if there isn't a size stamped, you should be able to find out the width from the part number.
