NEEDED: Driver's side mirror for '01 Golf
« on: October 24, 2006, 03:47:17 PM »

My friend's friend broke the driver's side mirror of his '01 Golf GLS 2.0. It's a dark blue color (stock). He needs to get it replaced ASAP but can't afford dealership prices. If anyone knows where he can get one, send me a PM or email, generalemails2 1ATyahoo.com

Nice, thanks. What is the official name of that dark blue color?

It's a very dark blue, like a navy blue.

Pretty sure it's galactic, I'll have to double check though. It looks like that jetta(?). Thanks for the help, now I just need to find the part in that color. The mirror glass itself isn't replaceable is it?

Sure it is... why wouldn't it be?

Carlos has the split mirrors in the GTI (MkIII but it has power mirrors too)... he repalced the glass...

Because it's a VW, I dunno. Making the glass replaceable would make about as much sense as them not using a plastic impeller on a metal spline in a waterpump.

Many, if not most car companies make the mirror glass nearly impossible to separate from the mirror body.  I'm not sure if VW is one of them or not, but just FYI that a lot of car companies sell the mirrors as assemblies.

When I was messing with my mirror housings it APPEARED that I could take the glass out without much efforts...

I'm pretty sure (almost certain) you are correct regarding VAG's, but I think it's different for most other car companies.

That was what I thought too. I know the older scirocco ones don't come apart and I asked some dealership techs and they didn't think it did either. I think I'll just keep searching for the whole unit and go for a sure thing.

Sweet thanks. The person who needs it works all the time, so I don't get many chances to check out his car and see exactly what's up. A dealership tech will be doing the actual work either way as he has a hookup on labor at a VW place. A tech he talked to didn't think the glass could be replaced seperately, but that doesn't necessarily mean it can't.

Did he break the housing or just the glass?  I may have an extra glass laying around, and I'll be in your area tomorrow. And, the glass can be replaced separately.

We are coming down tonight, but probably later than the GTG.  We'll be staying at the WA, literally:

She made me get it ;)  She doesn't like going to the races with me because it gets cold, windy, or the boys get tired/bored and have no where to go.  Also, since we're going to be doing a lot more traveling next year in pursuit of my racing license, she didn't want to keep staying in hotels.

The glass is broken, classic spiderweb. The housing itself seems fine. And I currently live in NY, so chances are pretty good it'd have to get mailed to me.

There have been a few larger purchases that she initiated of which I have been the real beneficiary ;)
