Alright, you've all convinced me...
« on: October 24, 2006, 02:27:27 PM »

Ok, SO, in light of some comments that made me realize that 18's on a stock height (even S4 stock height) car would look like dogshit on a cracker.  I have elected to go the path of keeping my RS4's reps and pick up a set of all seasons, keep them for winter wheels, and then get some 18's in the summer.

BUT

what that means is i am now going to start looking at coilovers.  I have one vote (nick) for H&R coilovers, which seem to be a good quality product at a fair price.  Was curious what experience everyone has had with their coilovers, any insights, reccomendation s, etc.

I am also getting the distinct impression that the control arms on the left front wheel are going bad, it seems somewhat loose when i make right turns.  As well when im making right turns if that tire hits a bump or hole etc, i can hear a clunk coming from the wheel well.  Could also be the bushings i imagine.

So yeah, any input on that would be good as well.

Well let me also say this.  I want ride to remain pretty close to stock, so i probably wont have much if at all higher spring rates.  Im looking at lowering it max 1.5" front/rear.  I will probably never do any auto-x or track use, so its mainly for a more agressive look (and less hounding from you bastards *wink*) and the plus side of having springs/shocks that *dont* have 71k miles on them.

I've heard the stasis are pretty harsh for ride quality?

My weitecs ride great when I have them set up at a more normal height.  They feel like they want to go fast.

And that is the beauty of coilovers, set them to whatever height YOU think looks best!

KW v3's

Ok, now that I am not kidding (unless you can afford those because they RULE)... Stasis is a good option, contact Joel at RS Motorsports for pricing.

Mk3 VR6 and B5 RS4, both of roads in Seoul (way worse than Colorado roads) and a vey nice ride at speeds all over the map from 0 to 110. I have been in both of these cars at least twice now and I was totally impressed on all occasions. Nothing super stiff, but gobs and gobs of grip when you ask for it (tires help a lot of course)

from my experience...

as the kw's go up in variants they get higher and higher.  ie a kw v1 will go lower than a v2 and a v2 will go lower than a v3.  but obviously you get better dampening control as you go up in variants.

kw is all stainless and they are warrantied for life.  weitec is kw's entry level brand and they are 'corrison resistant' and have a two year warranty.

h&r are not stainless and they wouldn't give me a straight answer about warranty but they're supposed to warrantied to cover manufacturing defects.

fk offers all kinds of different coilovers.  the silverline series are all stainless and they have a warrantied for life (so long as you have your receipt).  their other stuff is 'corrosive resistant'.

if you're car is a daily and you'll be driving it in the winter i'd suggest going stainless.

haven't dealt with stasis before.

no matter what be prepared to spend at least a grand.

if you just want to lower it, just do springs and shocks. it would cost less. don't you have to corner balance coilovers to get the most out of them?

i've had h&r sports springs with bilstein sport shocks for several years now. they are great for the track and i still drive on them daily. bilstein sports have lifetime warranty. i spent about 500-600 on my set-up. neuspeed and eibach also make quality springs.

Good choice.

I have only ever owned the overpriced and overrated   H&R coilovers and I swear to this day it was the best money I had ever spent when I owned VWs.  I like H&R but to each their own.

Having said that I would not hesitate trying KWs.  If they were good enough for Edo Competition and their GT2 that had the lap record at the Nurburgring then I suppose they know what they are doing.

i've had stock, h&r cupkit (hated it), fk coilovers (good until a strut went bad), and now kw v2's (love 'em).  i'm willing to pay a little extra for stainless construction and a life time warranty.  plus, eric (setuning) hooked me up (thanks again btw).  just my $.02.

Lance, one thing I would NOT recommend is going with STaSIS Street Sports.  Everyone that has run them has hated them.  The Track Sports are the way to go if you go STaSIS.  Otherwise, go H&R or talk to "E" or Eric as most of us know him as and see what he can do for your needs.
