Good luck learning your way around the springs.  All roads run in circles with no real order and some change names 3-4 times while you are driving on it.

Yeah you have to pretty much throw all of your logic out the window and you'll have a better chance getting around, I'm still figuring that one out.

How many streets go all the way across Colorado Springs without changing names?  Woodmen is the closest I can think of and it changes (makes that stupid right turn onto another street just west of I25).

N/S or E/W?

There really arent that many streets that just up and change names and are literally the same street.  Just like any city though most of the streets dont just run indefinitely from one end to the other.

Academy, Platte, Constitution, Nevada, Union, Uintah etc.  I'm sure there are many others as well, those were just a few that came to mind quickly.  I'm not sure what you mean by go "all the way across town".  There are countless streets that don't change names along their entire length, but there really aren't that many streets that go all the way across town, like Kutark said. Honestly, I can't really think of a single one.  I wouldn't say that's uncommon though, I don't think many larger cities have alot of streets that go all the way across.  It's just a matter of growth.  Some streets get merged with other exisitng streets and sometimes renamed, sometimes not.

IMO, the newer parts of town are the hardest to get around.  Streets don't run straight anymore, you curve around and get disoriented along the same street.  It may be more interesting and not so cookie-cutter and boring, but that's also a major factor in making it harder to get around I'd think, especially if you're new to town.

I may be biased though.  I've lived around the downtown/old north end area my whole life and have no problem finding my way around.  The streets are logically laid-out and right where you'd expect them to be.

I meant East to west. Platte ends before I25, Constitution ends west bound before nevada, Uintah does not make it all the way out east.  I know I am being picky but I am just saying as someone who moved here 3 years ago trying to figure this place out for the first few months was interesting. I moved here from Dayton and know my way around Toledo, Ft.Wayne, Columbus, Dayton, Cincinnati, and some of Detroit and this town takes the cake.

Downtown gets stupid with one way streets (yes, I know, like most other downtowns around the nation)...  I'm on the north side/Glen Eagle so for me everything starts with "south on 25 to"...

I'll agree with that.  That's one of the problems with the city and the planners know it.  There's really no "good" E-W corridor.  But, again, it comes down to past planning and growth.  There are a lot of streets that just can't be turned into one because of the growth that is in their way and there just isn't the room to put in a new road where it's needed.

I'm also especially sensitive to that issue a bit since my parents live near where Constitution would pass if it were extended to I-25.  If it were to go through, there would likely be roads built right through my parent's house or at least very close to it.  I do think extending the road would be good for the city, but it would punch it's way through a lot of houses in established neighborhoods just to get it done.  That's mainly why it hasn't been done yet.

I think (and my old native co workers agree) that COS is still very much a small cowtown that has overgrown itself.  The town does nothing to curb growth but does nothing major to support it (like major bypasses, cooridors, and traffic upgrades).  It seems most of the work is driven by developers and not well thought out planning.  I understand that comparably the taxes here are pretty low so there are not as much funds for those projects but something has to change before it gets too bad.

I'll also agree with that.  COS has had a huge amount of growth in recent times.  I've lived here all my life and although I'm not that old, I have seen a lot of changes.  I remember when Powers was still way outside of town, anything past Academy was like driving to Ellicott.  When I was in High School(about 8yrs ago), we'd have parties out in the fields where there are houses now.  It was like camping then, you couldn't see any city lights or anything.  Carefree and all those major cross-streets that exist now used to dead-end at Powers.  Constitution and Platte were really the only ones that went through.  It's amazing to me how much that area has grown and that's only one part of town.

Speaking of Powers though, talk is always being made of turning it into an expressway with overpasses and such.  But, they let the growth happen without setting up the infrastructure first and now it will be that much harder to fix the problem.  That's the issue all over town.  To much growth, too fast and not enough foresight to solve it before it happens. Look at I-25 if you need more proof of it.  Once COSMIX is done, we'll need part 2 right away. They fix present problems with less thought to what the future will bring.

Powers north of Woodmen is setup for overpasses... right now the road goes down and kinda curves out, but they are setup for powers to go over all the cross streets... now the south part isn't setup like that, but the north side is.

Yeah the down side of Powers is the South route not only takes a turn and passes close to Lamar but it runs in to the City of Fountain where they don't seem to have any visible plans to upgrade it to 4 lane from the Mesa to I25.

slowgli05, I will be returning from Iraq in late Oct or early Nov., so if you need help on post or just someone to shoot the shit with at lunch let me know. There are a few of us on post (me, Nappy,Nate, a black A3 driver, and a few more), although for some reason we NEVER got together durring the day. Yes, Yes, Nappy, we know you were on a 5 foot leash tied to your desk. When I come back, I demand that the Carson folk represent durring the lunch hour (at least twice a month). No discussion. This will be law! You can start with out me if you like, but it will not be manditory until I return. That is all. Stelo X-Ray out.

Yeah, I know. Nate is on his way out also, is he not? But I know there are a few here with me now and there has to be more there already. We will make this happen. Carson will be a better place when we get finished. Maybe the sight of nice Germany cars rolling around together will curb some of the retarded rice that has been taking over. We all have to do our part to make this world a better place (to look at).
