Mk1 fuel pump?
« on: June 09, 2006, 08:07:23 PM »

I am running out of ideas on how to fix the coupe, and I lack the propoer tools to test it so I am just going to start replacing likely suspects until it is running again... these are my likely candidates in order of precendece, if you have any of the following, let me know:

Mk1 fuel pump (82 Jetta)
CIS-E knock box
CIS-e fuel distributor

The pump can be running and the engine can still be getting fuel and that doesn't mean that the pump is good or that it's not the culprit.  CIS-E operates on a very high fuel pressure..and when that high pressure isn't there it acts funky.

It starts with no problem, and it idles damn near perfectly... BUT when you try to accelerate it has the following symptoms:

1 - sounds like it is underwater
2 - will not rev past 3k and takes almost 5 seconds to get here
3 - if you hold it at 3k for more than a few seconds it will stall
4 - blackens the plugs BAD... as if it was running rich!

I have a brand new coolant temp sensor, o2 sensor, and I swapped out the ignition distributor, and double checked the timing... none of those did anything. I also unplugged the DPR on the fuel dizzy... nothing...

No vacuum leaks, intake boot is new, all hose clamps are tight, sprayed carb cleaner all over looking for vacuum leaks... so like I said.... I am running out of suspects!

I know... and the day it started screwing up you could smell gas very easily. I have not noticed it again since then though.

Although, if the pressure is not high enuogh to atomize the fuel properly, I guess it could cause the same symptoms, right?

Have you tried another coil?

Also have you pulled a plug, cranked the engine, and observed the spark to see if it's good and strong?

I've got a CIS fuel pump.  It's not a genuine Bosch unit but it was used only for a few hours.

P.S. Are you trying to steal my car a peice at a time?

When was the last time you checked the oil?  If it was running really rich for a long time, you may have filled the crankcase with some gas.
