Brandon, I just got off the phone with Will (the owner), and I am going to check this thing out tomorrow morning at 10:00. I want to see with my own eyes what kind of shape we are talking about here.

Ok thanks that will help a lot, hopefully its not too bad.

normally i'd be all for a project car but i seriously lost count of all the projects that i picked up for under $500 with the intentions of turning into something cool and then they just wind up sitting in my back yard for years.  you're looking at a shit ton of time and money to make this thing even remotely cool or reliable.  that thing is a money pit that is better off being parted out.

swank, what ever happened to the 2002 and beetle?

Hey everyone!  It's Will, the owner of this 100LS.  Josh just left and took a ton of pictures for you Brandon.   He let me know about this board, so I joined.  Not sure how I missed it.  I am a VW/Audi/Porsche nut:

Current collection:
1974 Porsche 914 1.8
1978 Audi Fox Wagon (36K miles!)
1974 VW 412 4-Door
1973 Audi 100LS
1976 Audi 100LS
2005 Audi A4 1.8

Buy this car Brandon!  I would love to see it stay in Colorado.  Not too thrilled that you want to swap out the engine, but that's OK.  I am more of a stock kind of collector and this engine just needs a ring job which can be done with the engine in the car.  The old pushrod OHV Audi C1 engines are extremely well balanced.

Brandon, I just got back from Will's place, and let me tell you: this car is well worth it. I took lots of pics, which I will have posted shortly.

My assessment of the car on a scale from 1 to 10:  It is in pretty good shape for such an old car. Better condition than my Rabbit, cosmetically speaking as a whole - a 7 or so. Exterior paint is kinda faded, and a bit oxidised - 4. The body is super straight - 9. Some trim is bent or dinged, but nothing major, still pretty shiny - 7. I didn't see any major rust, but I didn't get underneath the car - 8. All the panels are straight and close well, body gaps are even - 9. Interior wise: The dash is in surprisingly good shape; I only noticed one major crack, and there didn't really seem to be lots of warping around it - 5. I was surprised by the carpet, it is in very good shape - 8. The guages look nice, though I forgot to check whether all were functioning properly - so I won't rate them. Upholstery seemed pretty good except for the driver's seat which of course is torn - 4.

I didn't actually drive the car, so mechanically I will just pass on to you what I noticed and what Will said. He put alot of new parts in the engine - worth the asking price alone. It has dealer installed A/C, not sure if it works well, Will may be able to expound on that. The car doesn't smoke from the exhaust, it smokes through the breather tube. Obviously it has poor compression in one fo the cylinders, so there is likely some blowby going on there. Will said the driveline behaves "good" so I think with the engine repaired it should be a good car.

It seems worth the asking price to me.

The A/C is complete and sealed but surely needs to be evacuated and charged.  Everything runs though.  Will

I am likely going to bid on this.  I really want this car but will yeild to Brandon.   He is up camping right now and I doubt he can bid from Eagle Rock.  If he wants to buy it off me for what I pay for it when the auction is over I'll still yeild to him but this car is really what I'd like for a driver and I know I can make the repairs it needs at the auto hobby shop in a day or two to get it going well.

EDIT:   Dammit I just don't know what to do about this car.   ARGH.

You can pick up a newer Cherokee in good condition for about $2000-3000.  Mine's only worth about... maybe $5000.  yeah, they are that cheap.

Exactly!  I have no shame admitting that.  It's my toy, not my baby.   ;-)
