I may have unknowingly spotted an extremely rare special edition 914 here in Parker. I just thought it was very gaudy, but apparently there were only ~400 of these "Creamsicle" 1974 914 Limited Edition CanAm cars ever built.

It looks exactly like this:

I think it's further north.  Powers and Dublin I think.

educate me on these 914's.  I've never liked them.  Aren't these cars "porsche guys" don't consider real posches?  Kinda like you only bought a Boxter cause you couldn't afford a real 911?

Yeah, they are kind of like the Fox.... they grabbed a bunch of existing VAG parts and slapped it together. A lot of the Porsche guys are now starting to truly appreciate them though because they corner and grip like a mofo.

they have a type iv motor which is really just an improved version of the old vw type i motor.  better head flow, better cooling, better oiling, etc.

Well, I'd say I'm a "Porsche Guy" and I've never understood the 911-elitism that some 911 owners seem to get. I think the root of the problem lies in the fact that alot of 911 guys don't know anything else about Porsche's history. If they did, and they knew about Porsche before the 911, they'd realize that the 914 is every bit a "real" Porsche as anything. In fact, it was designed by Dr. Porsche himself.

Funny thing is, it's always been kind of a dirty little secret that the 914 pretty much matched the 911's handling abilities, and in some cases outperformed those cars of the same vintage - given one had a two liter model.

914's are really starting to catch on with performance minded enthusiasts because they handle so well right out of the box.

That being said, perhaps I am biased as my first Porsche experience was my dad's 914 2.0, and my own was a 928 - both kinda underappreciat ed with the (911-owning) majority of Porsche owners. I  personally think that anything with a Porsche badge on it (even the Cayenne) is a world-class vehicle, with lots of thoughtful and  quality engineering in it. Perhaps there are two general types of Porsche people - 911 and Other.

Here's my dad's:

Just kidding, here it is:

I wondered if that was the case because of the 5-lug pattern, but dismissed it because of how clean it was.  I wish that car were real.

It's real (or it was back when I did it) - I only did a color shift. This is so old, that I did it using Adobe PhotoDeluxe Business Edition 1.0

Yeah that black one is fucking tight.

I do agree the 914s are at Dublin and Powers by the light.  My bad.  The 914 happened when VAG bought 51% in Porsche to bail them out when they were struggling.  If I remember correctly.

I don't think VAG ever bought 51% of Porsche. In fact, at least 51% of the company has always been held by members of the Porsche family (now mostly just Ferdinand Piech).

I think you are right.  Porsche ownes 13% of VW which was a move in 2005 to block damler from a possible take over attempt.

Or just get a 914 and put a mild turbo on it.  You have a stronger base engine in the 914 than starting with a 1600dp build up.  250hp in one of those would be freaking insane.

They only bought 13%? I thought it was supposed to be 20% - so they'd have a majority; and I thought it was to protect VAG from a hostile foreign takeover, so it wouldn't wreak havoc on the local economy in Lower Saxony when the "you foreigners can't buy VW" law expired in 2007. If that were true, Porsche's 20% plus Lower Saxony's 18% would ensure that no company which wanted the downfall or downsizing of VW could buy it...

Those damn Lower Saxons need to get their shit together and post consistent propaganda on the web.

The Kinda-midlevel Angles never had these kinds of issues...

a yellow 914 was my first porsche experience as a kid. always liked them since.

i believe porsche bought 15% of VAG and it was to prevent a take-over from the likes of daimler/chrysler (mercedes and porsche don't mix - long story).

the porsche family has always owned a controlling share of porsche.

the 914 was a joint venture between vw-porsche. in america, all 914s were porsches. in other countries they were vw or porsche. the 914-6 is the one to get - had a 911 flat-6 from factory. many people have since swapped the 911 motors in the 4-cylinder models now. also suspension and wheels from 911s will swap over, which explains why you will see 5-lug wheels on 914s, they were like that from the factory or swapped later in life.

that photoshop you did josh looks like the owner of kinesis' car and if so the wheels were red before. that is an awesome car.

914s are getting more popular because they make good track cars. obivously a mid-engined car will handle well if set up properly.

a lot of the people who buy 911s are buying them as status symbols and rarely know much about porsche history or the engineering behind the cars. there have been many non-911 porsches that are on the same level or outperform the 911s. late eighties 951's (944 turbo) are a good example. they handled better and had a lot of power. some say were a better car than a 911 of the same era. there are some hints of that again these days with the cayman. it is supposedly a very well designed car and with the right tuning could at least perform as well as a 911 for less money.

edit: for the record (and josh's benefit) the 928 was faster and more stable at speed than a 911 in its heyday...

sorry, i like porsches....

Don't apologize for liking Porsches. Thad's information is mostly correct, but the 914/4 2.0 is the one to get. The 914/6 sounds cool in theory, but is too buggy, and not as well balanced. :P

They are for sale.  The nicer of the two (the blue one) is $4200 obo.  The black is in rougher shape but no price so it must be free.

I don't have any first hand expirience with them but they seem like good cars.  One thing I have heard is that they are not quick.  No blazing acceleration, no throwing you back in the seat but I have heard over and over that they are the closest thing you can get to driving a go cart on the road.

It's all relative. My dad's was quick, but he had a modified Typ 4 mill in it. The handling is phenomenal.

I thought so, that's all I ever read (and I try to stay abreast of Porsche developments).

So, I talked to the owner of the Creamsicle 914. Turns out it is a genuine 1974 CanAm LE car. The owner knows exactly what he has, and he got it from somebody (who obviously wasn't aware that their 914 was worth about $13,000) in trade for - get this - a Corvair engine.
