Nah it just takes a few parts from TT. A block off plate and some other little bits, which you would put on pre-install. Definitely worth it unless it's for some DD you're just putting to and from work in. Here's some info. I'm on dial-up so I didn't want to take the 20min to check the links.

I think TT may have more info on their site as to what parts you need.

There is a little bit of work involved, not that much though..but seriously if you are swapping a 1.7 for a 1.8 8 Valve you are just plain retarded..yeah I said it.

All that work for basically nothing.

If you are going to do it at least make it worth your time or leave it alone.

I'm gonna disagree with you there, Pat.  The 1.7 starts at like 74hp tops out at like 80hp with an exhaust, cam, intake, etc.  The head holds it way back.

A 1.8 is begging for mods with decent potential.  120hp with bolt ons is totally doable.  The mildly built and ported 1.8 carbed 8V Pickup I had in Iowa was quicker than a stock 16V Scirocco, and I was using a wide ratio trans.

Also - the 1.8 makes the thing liveable stock - the 1.7 makes you want to shoot it every time you get out of it.

This is Fitz we're talking about here Greg..the chances of him modding a 1.8L 8 Valve to a 120hp level are about as likely as Nappy not trying to publish internet graphics in paint.

So that's why I say what's the point?  Especially if the 1.7 runs anyway

You're right Pat I won't be modding a 1.8l to 120hp anytime soon.  The 1.7l is 100% gutless, but it does run.  Still though the motor mounts I need to replace will cost as much as the engine.  That'll put up at 90hp.

Got another IM today on VORTEX, not sure what I'd do with a bare G60, wouldn't the compression be a bit low for an NA motor?

PUREDREAMZ: i got a bare g60 block and g60 head if ur interested

His profile says he lives in Canada.. I don't think you want to worry about shipping.

I didn't think the compression was all that much lower on a g60. 9.0:1 maybe? The RD block is 10:1, which is the highest compression, most hp stock 1.8 8v that I know of (aside from maybe a Huron).

Yea, but zero benfit unless I was to boost it.  It doesn't have any of the stuff you'd want with a G-60 engine.

Shut up bitches.

G60 is 8.5:1.  40mm intake valves and 33mm exhaust.

Guess what the first Rabbit GTI was?

8.5:1, 40mm intake valves, 33mm exhaust.

It would be perfectly fine to run as is.  You would pay a premium for a G60 vs any run of the mill 1.8, but that isn't what you were asking.

If you install a higher compression 1.8 (10:1 RD motors, etc) and take it to sea level, you will have to run very conservative ignition timing, and premium, and possibly go with knock sensor ignition.

So is that why all the guys that used to bypass the chargers on their G60 motors complained so much about what a dog the engine was?

That's because it was 1000lbs heavier than the Rabbit it was in.

You know of any stock engined Passat 16Vs that are smokin fast?  No.  But that engine in a Rabbit/Caddy....
