VW or Auid for WY?
« on: March 01, 2006, 10:20:17 AM »

Interview went well yesterday with the WY ANG.

THey just got over a 5 day snow storm, so the weather sucks apparently.  LOL

What kind of VW/Audi would do well up there?  A Mk2 with big tires?  An old syncro?

Now  I just need to find one.

Did the Audi coupe come in a syncro?  It almost looks like a Scirocco.

Not in the US that I'm aware of

There's always the Ur Quattro which is a coupe on a truckload of steriods.. and well you'll need to win the Powerball lottery to buy one.

Before we waste our time helping you find a car what is your budget?
If you say like $500 I'm locking this thread  :P

I live in Cheyenne for 3 1/2 years, and it's not that bad up there - I had a 98 Camero the entire time I was there and no problems.  If it snow that bad, the base are normally closed.  I rode my motorcycle almost year around when I was there also.

Also close nit city (Cheyenne) and most try to help one another out, so I'm sure you wouldn't have a problem car pooling if need be.

LMAO!

any FWD car will do just fine on the roads. AWD is better than 4x4 in the snow. but if you budget is below 1500k i would say that you should look for a used late 80s early 90s subaru legacy. you cna get them cheap.

for ANY AWD VAG product your gonna need more than 1500 for a nice one. (yes you can find audi 90s that are beaters for less than that, but i said nice ones, that are in good shape out/in and mechanically)

If I get that job I'll have to go school in California for 17 weeks.  So I have time to work on buying a daily driver before next winter.

Get a Subie wagon. Everybody and their mother drives one here, they're always for sale for dirt cheap and they last forever. You really can't go wrong.

Good call actually.
Fitz since you seem to be looking for something "practical" to get you around in the bad weather I wouldn't rule out going with something other than VAG product.

Case in point:
I wanted a truck type vehicle to pull a car trailer, haul things, and also something that I could comfortably tote my dogs around in.  I bought a Dodge Durango and I'm completely happy with the purchase.  Granted it's not a VW but I just look at it as practical transportation rather than something I'm interested in as a hobby.

get an early 90's Audi 90 quattro.  That car with good tires on it is unstoppable in any weather and inspired more confidence driving on snow and ice than anything i've ever driven.  I'd take that car over any SUV, Jeep, slamyereye or anything else when the weather is bad.

Just buy a cheap one, I think i got mine for $1200.00.  Heated seats, leather and quattro, with locking read diff.  The cheaper the better if you just want a winter beater cause the suspension will be shot on all of em and if you worry about that kinda shit then they will cost you money.

Just change the oil, and drive the fucker and you can't go wrong.  If you wanna road trip car with a tight suspension and no bumps and creaks and noises then don't buy a used older audi.  If you want a car that will get you to work everyday through mad snow like a tank then get one. :)

Lived here in Laramie for the past 4 years and there has only been one storm that was pretty nasty.  I wouldn't spend much on something you are just going to need for shitty weather.  I'd go Subie since you can find them super cheap and they'll get you where you need to go in the snow.  Or, do like I have, and get a truck and throw a snowmobile in the back so you can go every where.

Those old subies are awesome.  A friend in highschool had one.  We would jump it, offroad it, do donuts in it, drift it, and just all around beat the piss out of it.  Fucker never gave up.

I know Ive heard that too about AWD vs 4WD.  Maybe someone with more expertise would be a better source, but if I remember correctly the difference is that 4WD is just all your wheels spinning simultaneously, where as AWD is wheels spinning independently to compensate for slipping and what not.  Hopefully that will hold you over until someone can verify it for me.

Actually I'm fairly well versed as to the differences.  I just want his explanation on the statement.  The only advantage I see is that with an AWD car you don't have to get out of your vehicle to lock the hubs (if your vehicle isn't equiped with autolocking hubs) and you don't have to actually switch the vehicle into 4WD.  AWD is always there.  As far as actual performance in the snow, well I am still waiting for his explanation.

My explanation would be the driver. AWD driver, "Yeah it's all wheel drive, but i'm still going to take it easy." 4WD driver, "I got 4 wheel drive, even though there is a foot of snow on the road I can still drive like an ass."

LMAO

Its sadly true.  I hate that shit too, and I laugh everytime I see a Jeep Cheroke or Ford Exploder etc etc stuck on the side of the road after a snow storm.
