Nick, seriously, im thinkin its your coilpacks.  WHen my coilpack went on the jetta it did exactly that and ran like ass. It was hard to drive and the cel was flashing when driving, but then when it was stopped at a light it was just solid... im leaning towards that.

you busy today? i dont think i can wait til tuesday when i see you next. come on Los... come through for me!

He is up 4 wheeling right now, you could probably try calling him...

So I unplugged the MAF. At first, the car was idling fine and then I unplugged it and it sputtered and ran like ass again so i plugged it back in. then when it started to sputter while it was plugged in, I unplugged it and it idled fine for about 2 seconds and then went back to sputtering. There is a strong smell in my garage of possibly raw fuel, I dunno what it is. Also when I unplugged the MAF, my traction control light came on and wouldnt shut off even though I tried to turn it off. So if I cant get a VAG COM soon, Im just gonna resent the ECU and go from there. does this sound like bad coilpacks. I pushed all of them down real hard and checked the wiring harnesses and all seemed okay, none of them were popped up like ive been hearing about when I searched.

I pulled off the coilpacks, changed the sparkplugs and reassembled. When I initially started it up, i thought everything was fixed. No CEL, no sputtering when idling or when I step on the accelerator. So i went for a ride around the block and I still have major sputtering and still no boosting over 4 psi. And then the CEL flashes and stays on when at an idle. But it does run better when you initally start it up and let it idle, and even when you press the gas.

Im still leaning towards the coilpacks...
he had multiple cylinder misfires, in cyl 2,3 and 4. Never said 1.
It also had a no maf signal but he did say he unplugged the maf. So that should be the cause of that cel.
And i did read some measurements.. . 26 misfires by reving it up to about 3500...  Im almost positive thats whats up.

nope... the only other dtc was his cat.
IT did have an unknown dtc... dont know why it would say unknown but besides that its just the misfires and the one for the maf.

Let me know what it turns out to be.

Okay so check this... I called Hamburger today. 31 bux and some change per coilpack. So I asked if they were warranted. He said if they insall them they will be warrented, and that would be 142.xx for just installation because they would have to scan the car to see if it was exactly the coilpacks. I told him that they were 98 percent the coilpacks and i asked him if it would still be that much for just the installation of the coilpacks. He said that it is 96 bux per hour for the shop and yes it is still 142.xx for installation and warranty. So I was looking roughly about 266 bux for these installed out the door. Oh, and I had to make an appointment for this less that 10 minute job..... that I just did my self. (more on that later)

Next I called team VW and they sold them for 27.xx a piece. I went to them after calling around 10+ stores in town and getting no one that carries them. So I asked them just out of curiosity how much to install them with a warranty. They said the parts have a 12 month, 12,000 mile warranty by them selves and it would be around 140 to 160 to install. So i told them no thanks on the installation, I could do it my self, buy a keg, get drunk, change my oil, flush my radiator, rotate my tires, bleed my brakes and put on my steelbraided hoses, and go to a stripclub and still buy 2-3 lapdances for that.

Came home, installed the new coilpacks and took it for a cruise around the block. Runs great, and I hope this solves the rough idle it has every once in a while. But I was thinking.... when I changed my plugs last June, I put dielectric grease on the tip of my spark plug.... do you think this was a cause in the malfunctioning of the coilpack?

No, but Carlos recommended them to me. He said that they replaced his coilpacks under recall, but apparently my VIN doesnt have ANY recalls at all, not one! oh well.

Yeah im surprised that they didn't cover them cuz the coilpacks have been quite the issue on 1.8Ts.  Glad you got it fixed though.
