*SNIFF*SNIFF*My luck finally ran out
« on: February 12, 2006, 06:37:14 AM »

So like the title says, my good luck with my car having little to no issues just ran out. Everything was running fine when I went home at about 1amish to take a nap (i had 24 hour duty) when my car started to sputter and hesitate and only push out 4lbs of boost. Before, when the car wouldnt be parked in the garage, I would have some cold start issues where the car wouldnt idle correctly, but after it warmed up everything was fine. So thats all I figured it was and i thought it would go away. But after driving it somemore and still the same symptoms, I was starting to get a little worried.

So when I pull in my driveway and shut the car off, I start it back up to see if it went away, and still the same stuff. So I pop the hood to see if I can see anything unusuall, mind you it is early in the freakin moring and I cant see anything with this P.O.S flashlight that I am using. So everything looks okay and left it alone and went to take a nap.

5:15 am comes and I go to start up the car and still the same crap. Well i have to get back to duty so I drive the car there and back. I know its probly not absolutely safe, but i dont have any choice. Oh and also when i am pushing on the accelerator, the check engine light flashes, but when i am stopped at a light it goes seady on.

Here is my quick, tired ive been up for the past 24 hours, diagnosis. Maybe my cyllinders are misfiring, like 2-3 out of 4 are. The car sounds like its running out of gas and about to die but still keeps its idle. It has well over half a tank. Also the car is sounding like an old beetle when i am taking off in first and second gears.

Los or anyone else who has VAGCOM, can you lend a helping hand and computer so i can see if it is throwing anyother codes than the previous one that i threw (02 sensor on the cat.) Also any other input would be greatly appreciated. I am going to go to sleep for a few hours and then im gonna go tear the thing apart to see if i could fix it. I refuse to drive this thing anywhere else for I have a fear of what Lindsey went through and blowing my turbo because of some strange reason.

My mods are: Revo 4bar, N75J, AEM CAI, Hyperboost DV, 3in TB, Samco TIP, EVOMS FMIC. Those are the main ones that cause an increase in HP/Boost so that is all im gonna list. I will have my instant messenger on if you would like to chime in and give your input there as well. mister_a218@yahoo.com
thanks guys and girls.

Yeah that too

The reason I said coolant temp sensor is  because I had basically the exact same problem with that B5 Passat (1.8T) .. turned out to be the sensor causing all the headaches

He was probably on CQ, and normally you and the other CQ runner make a little nap-time schedule with eachother.

Nick, seriously, im thinkin its your coilpacks.  WHen my coilpack went on the jetta it did exactly that and ran like ass. It was hard to drive and the cel was flashing when driving, but then when it was stopped at a light it was just solid... im leaning towards that.

Not as much as up to 02... but if its an early 03 it could still run into that issue. And even though they changed manufacturers and solved most of the problem, the new manufacturer may have some units that prematurely fail.

This is probly gonna be the only way to tell... right? The coilpacks were my next diagnosis, but I didnt know what the symptoms of bad coilpacks were. And when you say to "check them", what exactly am I checking them for?

You all are just taking shots in the dar. The only way to begin to diag the problem is to VAG it. And remember, just b/c the VAG says its something, doesn't mean that's the CAUSE, just the SYMPTOM.

checking out the maf and coil packs on a shitty running 1.8t are hardly taking "shots in the dark".

I'd still unlpug the maf and see if it runs better, it takes about two seconds.  The reason I suggest that is so he could "limp" the car around if he needed.  I agree that the real issue is probably the coil packs.

Vag it that's always obvious.

If that doesn't work then I'd get a new transmission and swap out te gauge cluster for one that doesn't have that pesky CEL on.

I think it is a combo of the winter air/ summer tires and the exhuast tip, but I might be wrong...  ;-)
