I am trying to figure out what the Audi hatchback thats similar to a MK1 Golf is called, and I would also like more pics of em in stock form.  Here is a pic of a BergCup version:

Also, where could I get one?

I know, I saw a pic of one about a year or so ago in a friends "Ultimate Audi Guide" book.  But he lost it and I can't remember what it is.  Doubt they ever came here but maybe canada got them, they did get the MK1 GTI about 3yrs before us.

were they available in Canada or Mexico? it would probably be way to expensive to ship from Europe.

Not sure. I doubt you'd be able to get one federalized.

"The Audi 50, designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, was a three-door supermini hatchback launched by Audi in 1974 and sold only on continental Europe. The car was offered with a 1093 cc engine producing either 50 or 60 PS (37 or 44 kW/49 or 58 hp) for the LS and GL models, respectively. The model was popular in Europe for both its high specification for a car of that time and the relatively low cost it was sold at.

The car was rebadged by Volkswagen and sold as the Volkswagen Polo in 1975. The two models were sold alongside each other for 3 years, but the cheaper Volkswagen model outsold the 50, and Audi discontinued the 50 in 1978, after a total production of 180,000 units, with the Polo range contining through numerous generations to the present day." - Wikipedia

guess that answers my question about canada

I don't know, as far as I know it would still only have to meet 1970's emmission/safety standards.  I don't see how it wouldn't already considering they can't be much different than a rabbit.

Why do you think I want one, its just begging for the drivetrain from an Audi TT.  A few upgrades and I'd be like, "Wow dude, thats a nice S4.  But my Audi 50 is is faster."

Dude, the Audi 50 would fall under the "25 year or older" exemption.  It wouldn't even need to be federalised.  All I would really need would be the title, bill of sale, and the money to ship it here.  Sweet, I wonder how much I'll have to spend?

Try "title", bill of sale, money to ship it here, money to pay taxes on it, money to get it titled in the USA, money for customs fees, money for people to filll all the paperwork out for you, etc...

If you can find one, you'll probably spend 10-15,000 dollars in getting one and getting it legal to drive on the road here. Not to mention, if you get one, you'll want to get one that's pretty much perfect - because finding parts is going to be a bitch.

Same marts as MK1 Polo, they are actually the exact same car.  They were made on the same assembly line in wolfsburg.  The Audi had all the options standard (ie: cigarrette lighter) and obviously different badges.

Actually I was thinking of using it for the berg-cup replica rather than my 78Rabbit.  I was hoping to use a MK1 polo and swap badges/grill but they were never imported to NorthAmerica either.  Looks like both us and canada got fucked on that one.

I'm not trying to rain on your parade, I just don't think it's very practical. And I knew that it was similar to the Polo, I said so waaaay up there.^^^

Not similar, same car.  And I am aware that it isn't practical.  When I get back I will see if I can find one thats already here or in canada but most likely that won't happen.  i could probably afford it but that would be all of my Iraq money gone.  I'd rather not do that.  I will just stick to using a rabbit.

Not trying to get into a pissing match here, but an Audi 50 is not the same thing as a VW Polo. One is an Audi, the other is a VW - and therefore similar but not the same. The differences are as minor as this discussion, but there were differences.

i.e., The Holden Monaro and Pontiac GTO are similar, but not the same. The Cadillac Cimarron and Chevy Cavalier were similar, but not the same. See my point?

ok how about this, they are mechanically the same car.  On the same chassis.  Offered in the same colors.  Came with the same size tires.  Had the same glass.  Were made in the same building.  Made by the same VW employees.  But they were not the same.
