Ok weekly pool night. Tuesdays @ 6:00pm at sticks.
« on: December 30, 2005, 06:30:05 AM »

This has proven to be the best day that works with peoples schedules and going at 6 lets us play until 9 for free.  They have drinks and food and the prices are pretty good.  We actually got better service than at Old Cs also.

Yep.  I plan on returning.  I may get a cheapo stick, but the sticks they had there were straight and not bad.

Hell, they could have kicked each one of us in the nuts and service still would have been better than Old C's.

LOL I agree.  I am working on getting a cheap stick also.  The sticks at Sticks are not that bad but I just want to get used to shooting with the same stick every time I play for more consistant play.  I need to be able to sink every 8 ball shot I try not 90% of them.  LOL

That was pretty funny.  Swank would break, and almost every time, it would come to him to make the 8, and he usually did.  I can't wait to play and get my chops back.

Bit of advice Greg and Swank. Just like everything else in our lives, don't go cheap with your stick. When I say cheap I mean brand not price. You'd be amazed at what a margin of error a "starter" Mcdermott, Viking (my choice), or Muecci  will give you compared to a house stick.

Little known fact: The best cue maker in the country (and pretty close world) lives and handcrafts cues in Pueblo. He used to have his shop off of Academy where the shops are in the median. Kikel is his name and the avg. waiting list for just a shaft is 9 mos. to a year.

Good to know - Joe, what would you recommend for a good stick to grow into without spending a whole lot?

Man, I miss playing every single day like in college.  Couple hours between classes?  Shoot pool and drink beer.

A nice entry-level stick would be Viking (of course I recommend viking over any other). Starter sticks begin at around $140+ up to $1K + for more intricate cues. I've owned almost every big-name stick on the market and Viking's have been my favorite. After purchasing any cue I'd recommend finding someone locally to re-tip the cue (preferrably with a pyramid or elk mid-soft tip). Jack Machelli down at Timeout lounge used to make a living doing this but he died a while back.

Dude, spending $140 on something that you enjoy doing isn't shit.  You spent more than that on that sheep blow-up doll you bought.

"I can spend $65 on a camshaft from JC Whittney and it is every bit as good as a cam from Schrick"

Right.  Which is why I ask the people that have spent the time and money to learn so I don't have to make the same mistakes.

you are comparing apples to scrotums....

a pool stick is something I do not depend on for transportation or even racing... a pool stick is something I use occasionaly to have some fun smacking balls around on a table. If I were serious about billiards then yes perhaps $140 is a justifiable cost, but for a weekly GTG with the fellas I think a $40 cue would be perfectly acceptable!

It was only a matter of time.

Scott, even you could tell the difference between a 40 and a 140 cue, trust me. The only difference between a 140 dollar Viking and a 500 Viking is the decorations and pricey woods used in inlays. I started with a basic McDermott, shot great but eventually moved up to a $475 (12 yr old) Viking. Shit Scott the carrying case was $270! The cue is not just something you'll use for gtg's at Sticks. A good quality stick will stay with you for years while that POS walmart budweiser cue will fall apart!

Those were only $19.99. I looked at them today. I think I am going to go by the billiards supply place tomorrow and look at some cues.

When hell freezes over and we get enough people interested we can start our own league team (APA or BCA).
