In need of 16v Alternator
« on: September 27, 2005, 06:48:00 AM »

Anyone know where I can find a 16v alternator???
Also does anyone know what size bolts hold it on.
I need to get an alternator for a Passat I am looking at.
But I have no idea where to find the cheapest one and if its a junkyard i want to go there prepared.

A1 Junkyard had like four 16v cars about a month ago.  They go for $15 if I remember correctly.

Otherwise there's the online stuff for like $90+ new.

Is it for a vehicle you are going to be keeping? If so, then I would go get a new (warranteed) or rebuilt one.

The price list I have for A1 says 9.99... but it's an old list.

top bolt is a 13mm, the bottom two are 17's, but I always replace them with 8mm allen head bolts...

if you have a semi-clean junk alternator, I have a lifetime warranty at AutoZone...

Probably just needs new brushes if it's not charging.  Replacement does not require that the alternator be removed.

For the lower right bolt, get an 8 inch extention and do it from beyond the dipstick tube...

slowly wiggle it up and down while pulling towards you, that is quite common... actually sometimes just going up and down several times will move it enough to get it off the bracket too!
