Instead of hijacking Jay's thread about the RMCB5 GTG... I created this new one.

Anne

Whats at PPIR Anne?
If it is scca then I will be there to root you on. Building the jetta for track fun but am going to try my hand at scca this year with either the 89 GTI
or I might build a new mk2 stock class car.

You have been saying that for about two years Brad. :P

There is an autocross in the VIP lot, and the road racers (Solo 1) will be doing their thing on the main track.

ok, here we go again... what class is my GTI in do you think??? suspension is upgraded and the wheels are wider and taller than stcok, that is it...

I am doubting the claims of the motor work because it is just not that fast...

http://www.scca.org/_filelibrary/File/2005SoloRules.pdf <- that is the whole rulebook.

This is what I think:  DSP Golf (16V) & Jetta (16V)

Hmmm.. I will be doing some reading.
I know I have been saying this but the only
thing holding me back is my black jetta..
needs brakes.. a full brake bleed.. some
upgrades to even qualify to be in scca solo.

Then there is the fact the 81 jetta did not
come with a 16valve engine.
Plus the racing suspension
I can go on and on.

Hence the reason I need to read all the different
classes and rules then decide what class I want
to race in.  :driver:

I think most cars that have engine swaps go into the donor car's class. Depending on what is done to the suspension, it will probably go into a SP class.

When is the first event Anne?
Is there someone from SCCA on hand to evaluate the Jetta?
IE put it into a class?

As a guess, I'd say OSP. Maybe even a mod class.

Here are the responses I received. For clarification, Brad's car was number one and Ryan's is #2...

I think the first one is safe in either SM or OSP. Looks just a
little too hybrid to fit into SP. The second one is definitely either
OSP or SM. No way it would fit into any other class. I think the limit
in SM is 3.0L for forced aspiration, so it's legal...

They both sound like SM to me.

I would say SM for both.

Now that we are all clear..

THAT is the reason I have not entered any events with my Jetta.
Better off just building it up for Second Creek and driving around
town and build a SCCA specific car.  :-(

Thanks for all your help Anne. Now I just need to figure out
what I want to do.

well, the more I think about it the less I think it matters for this type of racing...

Autocross is ALL about the driver, and that big ass turbo will probably make either very little difference or cause unwanted power at a very bad time... meanwhile the all motor Mk1 would be steady and controlled (power wise)... it would be a fair race, I would even give a slight edge to the Jetta with all variables being even.

Brad, ok so im a little dunk but.... who the fuck cares what class?  You got a 16v MK1 that you have spent lots of time and money on, just go race it.  Unless you are gonna be some SCCA lifer it doesn't matter what class your car is in.  As long as your times get better with each run right?  All this coming from a guy who failed tech inspection on his first day out with his MK1 16v.  I was so pissed I decided to sell the car rather than spend the $40 and two hours to fix it.   :)  ( not really true but it makes for a good story)

anyway, what im getting at is you have a competative car right now, forget building another one, just go race it and have fun.  No offense to Anne at all cause she's my girl but these Colorado SCCA guys are pathetic.  Don't become one of them, just go have fun with what you got.  If you ever become an SCCA weekend warrior who treats the Sunday autocross like it a fucking F1 event i'm gonna get mad at ya... :)

Yup, what he said.  I have so much wheel spin in 1st and 2nd it is disgusting.

well... you would be lucky to get out of 2nd gear on most Auto-X courses...

and London... I am about to become one of those SCCA weenies... LOL I am joining SCCA and racing the entire summer series... I plan to win rookie of the year and most valuable fokker as well as coolest fucker to run over 15 cones in a row... that is a very coveted trophy...

I agree that the SC failing tech was a bunch of bullshit.
One of the only reasons I took the position as Registrar was to be able to enter local events for free. I enjoy autocrossing. When you get like those fokkers in X class that shell out the dough for Hoosiers and travel all over the country- that's just too much.

Grrrr.. I was all set to just fix up the jetta and build a different race car and Michael has made me think twice.. Damn you Sir! Damn you strait to hell!

Now I need to figure out how to replace my belly pan and source some
new front fenders..

I also need to read through what is required at tech inspection.
I was fixing my torn CV boot and found out I got the wrong damn
boot. I thought it was a Scirocco axle and it is a regular mk1 jetta
axle.

I am going to fix the cam seal sometime this week so I can try and
make one or two SCCA events soon! Who do I talk to about getting
some magnet numbers?

I can't find the tech inspection stuff... I'll send out an e-mail tomorrow and find out.

For magnets, I made my own. You can go to a sign shop and get some magnet material for pretty cheap, then cut them out yourself. Use this for templates: http://www.rmsolo.org/makenumbers.html

Basic tech inspection means no leaky fluids.. no loose items which could fall off of the vehicle. secured battery etc etc..

I worked today for about 5 hours on my 81.. not intentionally.
Had a blown CV boot. While fixing that I found that the passenger
side of my diff was leaking through the Inner CV boot. After
fixing that leak I finally found where the oil was coming from.
Not the camshaft but the housing for the crankshaft on the timing
belt side. mmm.. joy!

I will be fixing the oil leak in the next week or so. Once that is done
I think I might have conquered all my leaky fluids.

I truly want to.. just need to figure out
what to do about rust. I have a bit of it
to deal with and I am not sure if that
is a issue. I will be at the next mt. elbert
event if nothing else to spectate and talk
to a official. Possibly register.

Battery tray is good.
I have it on the lower front fenders.. and behind
the rear wheels. basically where the rocks can spit
up and remove paint.. including the rockers.

Took her for a etest today. failed. But only because
it was running too rich. Needs spark plugs and
about 5 minutes on the gas analyzer at work.
