US Gran Prix, What a joke!
« on: June 25, 2005, 06:24:16 PM »

I know this is old news but I hadn't read any of it since my last post.  I heard later the true problem with the track and why the tires were blowing for only one company.  At least this is how I understood it and it does make sense.  It appears that Indy was poorly resurfaced recently and Firestone, which supplys tires for the Indy 500 was having issues with their tires failing on the new surface prior to that race.  They had to redesign their tires to account for this changed surface.  The tire failure problem was solved by Firestone for the 500.  Considering that Bridgestone and Firestone are actually the same company they had experience with this new surface quirks that Michelin did not.  Therefore, Bridgestone was prepared for this and was able to produce an F1 tire for these circumstances.  Michelin did not know how to deal with the problem until the problem arose and testing begun.  They had much less time than Bridgestone to address this issue as practices for F1 are fairly short.

BTW I think the idea of going to slicks again is great.  I can't wait.  I love the idea of mechanical grip rather than the dirty air that makes passing difficult.  Although the advancements in aerodynamics is staggering and noteworthy as well.  Also, I know they used to have F1 every Sunday night following the race on Speed because that is when I used to watch them.  This year is screwed though.  Speed doesn't show every race and their times are inconsistant.  I even caught one race on one of the big three networks with far inferior commentary.  Speeds commentary is spot on with true experts especially since they got rid of that idiot Rick DeBrule.  At least Deadwood kept me sane for a while there.
