Greg if you read this please call me (660-7139) I cannot get through to you about that VR6.  If its unavailable now I can continue with this motor.  Your voicemailbox is full so I cannot leave a message for ya.   Thanks..

Here is the issue I am running into with the motor from Pat.  I could be wrong but is this not that big of a deal if I hone cylinders (which don't really show much damage at all just slight scratches from this #6 rubbing) and put in new rings.  The rod bearings look to be in good shape they have no scoring or signs of overheating.

I know its not textbook good but will it drastically effect longevity when reassembled?  I am pretty sure this is the compression problem Pat was seeing with it in the raddo.

I would replace that piston if it were my motor going together.

OK..  There is a very good chance my VR in the Jetta has a good donor piston.  How does that work with the pins and rod sizing?  Matched?  Take it to a machine shop?

Yeah I am sure you are gonna need a machine shop to make sure everything is up to par. I would just use the one Ryan went to since they have already seen one of these and at least have a cluepon on how to make it work!

You are going to do new rings right?

definately have a machine shop look at the block. scratches in the cylinder wall may look small but get a professional advice. sometimes it requires a rebore in which case you have to get bigger pistons etc...i would play it on the safe side since your boosting

So it was the rings that caused the scoring?

It looks to me like it may have been some debris... The scoring looks like it goes past the ring seats.

The piston is not bent thats the rings off center.  They move around.

I think my big set of calipers can open far enough I am gonna check the piston to see how round it is and compart it to the other pistons.  It looks to me like something got in there and caused that wiper ring to stick to one side.  I can still see most of the crosshatching in the area of the scoring in the cylinder wall so I don't think the damage goes that deep..   More investigation to follow tonight.

This would be much easier with that other VR6

You have a clearance issue that needs to be addressed. I would check the round of the sleeve in the block and check the donor piston you will be using. When you are ready and put the piston back in I would push the piston up and down to check the operation and rings  before bolting it on to the crank.

I totally agree Jeff, Pat, Scott, Mitch and plan on checking this badboy out.  I really don't want this thing broke again.

Went over and visited Gred D tonight.  Gonna do that low mile VR6 option and save this one for a later date.

I am gonna pull the piston rings off these pistons, and reassemble this block to keep everything straight, then grease it up again and store it for possible project motor in the future.   Never know when I may decide to upgrade.  At least now I know what I have here.  The #6 cyl has some scoring but very light and the piston skirt has some damage too.  Everything else looks good.  It would be a great block for a 2.9l upgrade with pistons, ARP bolts, and a fresh start..

Thanks for all the info guys.
