And before it came into my possession:

And now since its been in my possession:

Oh and then it won VWOTG:
AND THEN IT WON BUG IN!!!:
Prepping it for DATR: Deleted the overflow reservoir and battery relocation:

Test fit some wheels:
At one of our BJ's Ice Cream Cruises:
A couple photo shoots with it:

I wonder if we could get SmokeStack to merge the cage-build thread with this one.

I could, but it would organize the post's in chronological order. Makes following the conversation hard, but you could edit the first post(s) and add a link to tie them together. Let me know what works for you guys.

Well, then I'll just repost the pictures and verbage on this thread, and if you can delete the old thread, that would be awesome.

SO here we go.
Once upon a time, there was a sunny Saturday morning in Colorado.  A phone alerts it's owner of a strange txt message.  And then...

....it was on!

Well, we had time, so we made things happen.  James (719mkv) came by today to see how far we would get on his cage.

First a picture of the subject.

Then it was measurement time.  To keep us from getting run over, we moved the operation to the lawn, or at least what winter has done to it.

The first bend attempt on the main hoop was pretty good at the sides.

But I miss-read a measurement "39" as "31" so it was a little...well. ..narrow.

Bend attempt two.  With some instruction, James jumped right in.

Cool angle shot..

...I have a JD(squared) model 4 full hydraulic bender, in case you're wondering.

Second attempt was better, definately wide enough.  But still....wasn't perfect.  Strike two.

Third attempt we chucked the computers ideas, and did it old school.  Ended up changing up a few measurements.  Tweaked the angles.

PRESTO!

Without the headliner we tucked the bar all the way to the roof supports.  James held the bar up while I marked the trim mark so that it lands on the rocker.

To make sure the bar was even across the top, we used some spring perches to hold it off the roof.  Worked well.

With the trim cut done, it landed perfectly on the rocker.  Of course, I built the cage a tiny bit wide ~ which is why you see the ratchet strap in pictures.  This way, when you release the strap, it holds itself in.

But the height is perfect, its tight and AWAY from James' head.  Smokin.

The main hoop was tucked in pretty good.

The bends matched the angle of the interior well...

And there was only a finger(ish) width on each side spare (thats without trim)

Head room?  Oh yeah!

Lookin good, High and tight!

Time to start building the base.  James has a rear tie-bar that will be replaced.  We are going to tie the two shock towers together with 1.5" cage.

After some wire-wheelin' to remove the factory paint, we welded in a 3"x5" plate to spread load and give thicker metal.  Then welded the new tie bar in place.

Bar in.

Then it was time to plate the main hoop's LZ.

James seems pretty happy so far.

Main hoop was next.  Seeing how thin the stock metal was, I was actually REALLY glad we ended the main hoop on top of the rockers.  I mean, the floor is a joke (for strength) and mounting it to that would be quite....:screwy:

So we got out the plasma cutter and started cutting up plates for around the spot where the main hoop would sit.

With the main hoop back in place, I'm feeling more comfortable.

After welding the main hoop in, James decided he wanted a diagonal bar to connect the main hoop with the rear shock towers.

Coping the bar wasn't easy, but having a PipeMaster helped a ton.  Still had some clean-up to do to get the gaps right.

It is insane how quick the days go by this time of year.  While I was welding the sun dipped behind the mountains and it was getting dark and cold fast!

Another shot with the camera exposure set on the sky.

After q quick cooling period, it was time for some self-etching primer.  We will be adding more to this cage later, but we're out of time today, and next weekend I go to Cali for Christmas.

Another angle.

With the door shut.

Another shot from the passenger side.

From the outside, you can barely tell there is a cage in there!

Only one bar is currently visible, and if you're not looking for it, you probably will miss it.

But enough of that...  Here's a couple shots of the rig.

We'll be meeting after the new year to finish off the rear (if he wants more bars back there) as well as adding a front to this cage.  Stay tuned.

James was able to come back today for a little more work on the GTI cage...so ...here we go.

First up, finish the rear of the cage...that means getting friendly with the angle grinder and a wire-wheel.

I got to work hole-sawing some tube for the other half of the X for the back.

All welded up.  Really getting solid.  I mean that main hoop don't move for anybody.

Next it was time to tackle the front...and boy it took a little. I didn't get any pictures of him, but Dan (an old buddy) showed up ~ poor guy had a 'girlie' party (not sure if it was candles, makeup, tupperware) at his house and needed a place to go.  We provided somewhere hand he helped out.  Which was a good thing.  Getting the tubes to fit inside the dash was a pain, and an extra pair of hands is always good.  Considering Dan worked with my back in my Scout days, his familiarity with the whole cage-building stuff was nice and helped.

The goal is to put the cage straight through the dash where the old speakers used to be.

Keeping it high was key... working out pretty well once we got the bends dialed in.  Its amazing how a couple more degrees on a bend can really make or break ya.

Basic placement on the tube..

From the outside, you can barely tell its in there.

Another shot...

Time to the other side!

Moving to the passenger side, and being armed with the first spreader, we made and had the second front bar in place extremely quickly.

A really cool thing was we were constantly getting buzzed by these things.  I believe they are called 'Os-spray' ~ I dig them because they are a plane-chopper.  Too freakin cool.  This one was off to the side of us, but one came right over my place...that was sweet.

Also had a A10 fly over too.  Those are my personal favorites. (sorry no picture)

After getting the spreaders to fit nicely in their new homes, we decided it'd be fun if we could keep a 'finished' look to the dash by keeping the speaker grills in place.

Freakin' turned out awesome.

So, what about the vents?  Well, after some custom 'molding'...

They also looked great back in their home.

Driver side.

After things were all welded up, it was time to re-assemble (stephanie).

Picture from the back.

And one from the front.  As you can tell, we ran clean outta daylight this time around.

But the progress was well worth the time.

Another shot from the hood.

I always try to get some pictures, but with the daylight done, I tried to get creative.  I'm not Dobbin's, but I try.

Few more....

That's it for now folks.  The cage is pretty much done, James wants some door bars to scratch his bootie on, and I've got some finish welding to do, but that's another weekend's worth of work.  Till then.

I have something in mind... I'll be paying in cash to get welded if that's cool?  I'll hit you up in a week about it.

James, the car looks good. Now get those last minute parts and lets finish off this beast before VWOTG!
