Any interest in Cages?
« on: October 12, 2011, 08:45:00 PM »

So I'm going to be adding a cage to my Jetta (mk1) when it gets back from RSM, and that got me wondering, is there any interest in decent built cages for VWs?  I've custom build cages before, I figure this may be a good way to make a little money to get my seats re-upholstered.

It occured to me that some of you may not know my skills with cages.  So I thought I'd let you know that I am not a beginner at cage work, nor do I have a crappy HarborFrieght tube crusher.  I used to be a full-time custom 4x4 fab guy (www.dandcextre me.com)

My bender is a JD-squared Model 4, fully hydraulic bender.  It leaves no crushes in the inside of the bends.  And my setup cost upwards of $4500.  I have 5 dies.  2", 1.75", 1.5", 1.25" and 1"  I also have a PipeMaster for custom notching, a standard tube notcher, and a Miller 250x welder along with a plasma-cutter for good measure.

Here are some pictures of tube-work I've dove.

I can help with that.  What model are the cars? Mk1-??  What size tubing do you want to run, the smaller the better because of tighter radius's and we can get them to hug the interior.  I'll be building a rear-half for my mk1 jetta when I get it back.  I'm planning on using 1.5" O.D. HREW.  I'm not building it to 'spec' but rather to fill the interior a little and I'll probably tie it through the rear speaker shelf to into the trunk and suspension mounts.

Send me a PM, I have next week off and will be doing cage work then.  If you want to stop by sometime, PM me and we'll arrange a time to map out what you want in your car.

If you want the cage to go behind the dash ~ or through the dash ~ then you'll have to remove the parts of the dash to facilitate that.  A little extra work, but that will really make it look trick and afford you much more leg room for entry/exit.

My MKI is a RabbitGTI, and the MKV is a Jetta. Im currently in Michigan for the next week(ish) but will hit you up once i get back in town. The rabbit i want a full cage, there is no interior minus the dash so yeah lol and the Jetta i will have to do some work to the back seats to go around the rear down bars or whatever they're called lol. Jetta will need to specs but the rabbit one is mainly for looks so not to concerned about it.

My MKI is a RabbitGTI,
Is is primer black with a cool motor and a laptop for a dash board/gauge panel?  If so, I saw it at the GTG the other month.  I was there with my kido and he was diggin' on it.

Sounds good.  We'll take a look when you're in town.  I'm very confident that the GTI will be pretty easy (that's a relative term), we'll just need to work around the interior on the Jetta

No that's the 1.8t swapped one... mine is flat black as well but i still have the stock JH in mine. Its getting turboed when i get back.

And as for the Jetta, i've seen people cut notches in the back of the rear seats and have it sewn back together around the cage but usually that's the only thing done.

Funny story: Years ago we went looking for a car for my wife.  We found a Turbo Talon AWD, we didn't know it was a turbo at first, but as she sat behind the wheel, I looked and saw the boost gauge.  I said: Oh, its a turbo!  My wife, as she was pulling out of the lot and down Platte stepped on it while she said: "what's a turbooOOOOOO~!"  As you might have guessed, the turbo kicked in right when she said that and we were off in a flash.  I said:"Thats a turbo."

We didn't buy that car, but my wife has known what a turbo is from that point on.  Diggin' it.  I'm going to be looking to turbo my Jetta in the future.  It'll be fun.  What's that quote?  "Turbos make torque, torque makes fun"?

That's what I"m planning on my Mk1 Jetta.  Put in a main hoop that will HUG the headliner something fierce, then put two rear spreaders along the roof-line then down the C-pillar through the speaker panel then make a new panel that will go around the cage.  My setup will be as 'invisible' as I can make it.  My goal is to hug the interior keeping the cage HIGH and out of the way.  I guess we'll see how it turns out, but its not my first rodeo.

Here's some pictures of my Jeep Cherokee cage.  I built it with the same principle.
Here you can see the B-pillar stays high and the rear bars well above the door opening.

Here's the rear hatch bar ~ you can see how I kept the rear spreaders above the windshield until they come down.

Seatbelt bar, still not 100% my Jetta will have one of those, but I think it'd be a good idea especially for the rear people ~ something to eat in an accident  :banghead: ~ I mean, hold onto when taking turns (they'll have seatbelts so they won't be eating anything) ;)  )

See how happy people are when you give them an iron rod?

Here's my end goal ~ but with an XJ ~ you can barely tell there is a cage in there.

The only tells are the down bars in the back...

And the seatbelt bar

Anyway, that's the plan on my Jetta.  I realize alot of guys build cages that are 'hey, LOOK AT ME I'm caged and a hard-core street racer ~ LOOK AT ME' ~ and if you want one of those, I can help you in that category as well.

Lmao at your last quote... i don't know though... i have gone through a lot of "themes" with the Jetta but i am done with that, i have only one goal and that is to make it as luxury race car as possible. So im not sure if i want the cage showing or not, probably do. I don't generally have rear passengers but as long as they can still maneuver their way in lol. I might be changing the front seats out to fixed back racing seats so i do know i want a harness bar. There's a guy up in Denver, names Justin Chin, he auto crosses his MKV Jetta and i pretty much want the exact half cage he has.

I have been considering a 6 point (2 door bars, hoop with a cross bar, and tie the hoop into the trans mounts) in my aircooled. intersted in taking a look at it?

Its gotta be legal to run 10.90. similar to the bolt in cage at the top of the link. I think it would need to be 1 3/4" Id prefer Chromolly. Can you tig weld?

I'm good with that.  However I do not TIG weld, just MIG.  Chromo is good stuff, but should be TIG'd because of the metallurgy associated with it.  So Chromo, I can't do. But DOM I can.

Well, there are many variants between totally hidden and 'in-your-face'.  I'm just personally against putting a big bar right through the window and painting it 'graber green' so that no one can miss it.  But its your car, so hey...  I saw a BMW the other day that was a 4dr and the back door was completely useless because of the cage.  That didn't make sense to me.

I totally understand the 'luxury race car' principle.  After all, I'm designing something of that nature for my Jetta ~ however, my kids will be in the passenger seats, and I want to give them as much room as possible.

I;ll do what I can, I work 8 or more hours a day so it would be evenings. I plan to pull the engine this weekend, would you be interested in taking a look at it then, would give a much better idea of what would need to be done with the trans. mount and how to tie it into the main hoop.

EVENINGS ARE NORMALLY GOOD FOR ME while I'm off.  Being a UPS driver I'm normally out 9-10 hours a day easy.

I'll be busy on Sat through mid afternoon.  Sunday is bad for me.   Sounds like you want quite a cage.  I'm sure I can pull one together easy enough. Let me know when you're ready and I'll take a look.

GREAT QUESTION ~ and perhaps I should have said something to begin with.  Back in the day, when Smokestack worked at the shop (good guy, knows his stuff as you guys know), we had a standing deal ~ if you help us build a kit, figure $300 + feed us.  Good news, I don't drink beer or alcohol, so its like burgers and brats.

Depending on complexity and materials, I'm kinda hoping to stay near to that.  Those were 'easy' cages, where the top came off and we could do something in a few hours (like 4).  As long as there isn't any major things ~ like we need certain materials, or a TON of bars, tie ins, diagonals, halo's, frame ties, gussets and all to make it work, I'm hoping to keep to that price(ish).  Know what I mean?

For example, my MK1 Jetta.  A main hoop, and two back bars with a cross-support above the rear window ~ I'd say that's a $300 job ~ parts and labor.

But lets say you want a SCORE cage.  Main hoop, a diagonal in the main hoop from driver head to passenger floor, seatbelt/harness bar, two downs with an X.  All in DOM materials ~ ya, that's like over $200 in materials alone.  If we are building to a spec, I will want to quote it.  That will require seeing the vehicle and the rule book your basing off of.

A simple main hoop with two downward rear bars ~ installed, yeah, $300 parts/labor easy.

A FAVOR:  The one thing that will aid in this category, is not making me deal with your mess.  Meaning, don't come here with a car full of crap.  Nobody wants to wade through yester-year's fast food wrappers left in foot-wells or the back seat.

When I did cages for Cherokee's, I made the participants come with their interior as removed as they could make it.  Meaning, the rear seats were already gone, and as much of the crap was out of the way.  This makes it easier to build a decent form-fitting cage with as little 'collateral damage' as possible.

Those considering participating should remember that welding creates a TON of heat and sparks.  I have welding blankets and cardboard to use as shields, but the more you can get out of the way, the better.  Common sense tells us if you come with a car with floor to ceiling purple shag carpeting drenched in last nights AXE body-spray, something is going to catch fire.

I WILL NOT BOLT A CAGE DOWN.  I WILL NOT PAINT YOUR CAGE.  These are time consuming and costly endeavors, you can do that after we're done and take your time doing it.  I'm a family man, doing this as a way to help 'speed' my interior build ~ and maybe get some 16" Snowflakes (did you know they have split-rim snows now?)

FOR INSURANCE AND LIABILITY REASONS ONLY ~ I do not say these are 'roll' cages.  Just CAGES.  Building and advertising 'ROLL CAGES' implies that they will save your life in a roll over, and I don't want any family members coming after ME for YOU killing yourself while doing something stupid.  So PLEASE understand, if we do this, I'm building "SHOW BARS" that MAY OR MAY NOT hold up to mild to severe rollovers.  I DO NOT guarantee the performance of the 'CAGE' ~ Only that you might feel special by having one. ;D

That said.  I have built SCORE rated cages before.  I have YET to have a failure in any cage I've built.  Most of my work WILL PASS INSPECTION without any modifications (when built to the standard).

Hey man, it was good meeting you at the GTG.  After I left I thought of a trade.  I sent you a PM with an idea that would allow us both to get what we want cheap.  Check it out.  Let me know.  Time is of the essence for me so if it won't work out, that's fine too, just let me know.  Give me a call.
