If you have a regular MK1, there isnt a fuel pump in the tank.

Yessir I stand corrected. I found that lil bastard under the body on the passenger side. Fuel looked go on both sides. However the intake flapper was gummed up and my air filter was soaked with oil??? Getting that fixed soon. And I pulled the airbox to clean the main ground and its all shiny now.

I'd check for the intank pump seriously everyone told me i didn't have one sold the car cause it(Didn't know jack or shit about MK1 at the time) wouldn't run , bought it back first thing i did was pull the seat and look and sure as shit there was alittle lift pump with a round filter on the end , plus the pump outside on the passenger rear....

the pic is basically what it looks like, i'd look casue when i searched i got yes/no as answears to a 84 gti having one or not...
God dang it Aj... You dont have a real MK1... You have a cabby.  They are weird freak Mk1's that just complicate life in general.

alright besides the cabby comment.

I cleaned all of the grounds in the engine bay, and even cleaned the ground the fuel sending unit uses. Still no fuel gauge. Got a temp gauge, and the lights are still coming on. Also re wired the alternator.

Now i multimetered the system, got 13.9-14.0. then multimetered the fuel gauge terminals and got 3.4 volts??

basically when i turn the key on, the fuel gauge moves to half way and stays there. Then when i start the car it moves past the full mark and stays there regardless of disconnecting the sending unit.

im thinking a burnt resistor on the board. But i could be missing something.

thats what it seems like... normally it is the sending units that go bad.

Sounds like you have the fuel gauge wired up to the alternator after going through a voltage regulator. Recheck the install you did on the cluster.

normally yeah i would say its the sending unit. This time however the gauge shows half when the sending unit is unplugged.

Ok i rechecked, unplugged replugged in everything. Problem is that the temp gauge is now showing off the chart and the fuel gauge wont go past half. Im in the process of figuring out where all these wires find their power. And when i find the dark crystal they are attached too im gonna pulverize it Chuck Norris style and reconnect them to a 12v.

i know it has to be something cluster wise, the sending unit for fuel and the temperature sensor are disconnected so i shouldnt show a damned thing.

Sounds like you have a short in the cluster. Generally, one power wire feeds the cluster. Each gauge ties into the power trace and the ground of the gauge is the sensor. So, basically, it sounds like you have all of the gauges grounding out which is causing them to peg, flash, etc. Do you have a Bentley manual for the car?

If you're going to deal with Haynes go to the public library and copy the diagrams they have. If you want to spend money on a manual get a Bentley. Remember the issue you're having with a miss due to bad plug wires made by an American company and sold cheaper than the set you should have bought? You'll experience something similar if you skimp out on a Bentley and pick up a Chilton or Haynes. A shoddy wiring diagram will give you just as many headaches as no wiring diagram.

Bap Geon can get them, or you can order them from places like ECS Tuning. Ordering over the internet will be cheaper if you can wait a few days. Same goes for your plug wires or any other part you may need for your car.

Well my MK1 is a freak and all , but i think you need toget a different gauge cluster....The Temp/fuel/rpm all run thru that big ass electrical connector.  Mine die going down the road reach up in there and bump it and everything comes back...

well i think im going to do just that. considering i found the ground to the cluster exposed some of the wire and hooked it to a better ground and it killed the car...

Sure can. I also felt you should know your old cell number belongs to a rednecks young daughter now. I wouldnt suggest sending anything with profanity or sexual innuendos included. Her father will call you back.
