Yes, it is a normal 2 dr that was converted to a pickup.  There were a handful done back in the late 70s before VW made one, and then a few fone after that.  I have pics in old VW & Porsche Mags.  That is a later model, though.  I wonder if a dune buggy company made a kit or something?
