I have an Android phone (Droid 2 Global) and I rally HATED all that Motorola blur crap they put on it.  The problem is that no one is really doing any development for the global model because the hardware is quite a bit different. I found a guy that was doing it, but it looks like he has stopped working on it.  After doing a bunch of reading I decided that his version was good enough so I followed the instructions and BAM, my phone is now back to the way I like it!  I also don't have all those stupid programs like "Amazon MP3" or BLockbuster on my phone any more... it is nice having things just the way I like it!

Keep your eyes peeled for a custom kernel and some 1.6 madness

Not sure what sources you are using but xda is always full of helpful ish.

Looks like fission is a pretty decent start for AOSP roms

Yeah, I am using Fission... and I generally hate widgets... the only one I use is power control.
