Lots of Subie Swaps.  Another plus is you can use a Subie trans, too, because of the engine-forward orientation.  Wish I could use a Subie trans in the Vanagon.

Matt Monson in Boulder area runs GT Gears - Porsche transmission specialist, and has a subie 914 or has done some, something like that.

Cool, I just checked it out. Still trying to decide what to do. The motor doesn't leak so I think I may go ahead and switch to synthetic if I can get the zinc.

I would not do a full synthetic, it does not move the heat as good as the regular stuff and an aircooled motor to a point, uses the oil to help keep its cool.

The zinc additive helps with the metal on metal contact with flat tappet cams. Try going to American Speed Center on boulder and picking up the Comp cams brake-in additive, or spend the bucks for a straight 30wt oil called Brad Penn. Good stuff and I have ran it in all my aircooled motors with 0 issues.

Thanks for the info. I've seen the Brad Penn advertised and talked about quite a bit on the Porsche forums/mags. I'll definitely look into that. I ended up finding a conventional Valvoline 20-50 Racing oil with zinc additives. Used it for now to top it off.

The valvoline is also good stuff. I have used it in a pinch when the speed shops who carry brad penn are closed and I NEEDED oil.
