Chris, if you are worried about the airbox, I have a gutted ABA box with a K&N filter if you want it.

Thanks Jeff, but I already got a mk3 box that I cut up for this. The standard ABA box is too wide to fit in a mk2 without modifications.

Pics as promised. The thing is put together good enough for now. There's plenty of little details for me to work on over the next couple of weeks.

Looks good.  I am always impressed at how far a car can be dismantled and you have it driving within a couple weeks.

So, initial impressions are that it's a hell of a lot slower than the 16v (expected) and it doesn't have as much sound deadening as the MKV so the exhaust drone is louder. Going to pick up a resonator some time soon to fix that and maybe a little forced induction next year to fix the slowness. Other than that it's like driving ol' Bill again.  ;D

Thanks. Honestly I wish my hands were still in a condition to let me do this type of thing for a living. I just have way too much fun with it.

I will again recommend a cherry bomb glass pack for a resonator (seems I always do when I hear people are looking).  I think I picked one up for like $40 or less at Pep Boys.  Made a huge difference in the Jetta.

Find a chip for that OBD2 ECU.  Makes the car just a bit more fun to drive if you are willing to pay for Premium Gas.

You are still welcome to the K&N panel filter I have it you think you can use it.

I might snag it from you for the wife's car. I wouldn't mind getting a chip, but I'd like to match it up with a cam first so we'll see if I can manage that sometime this year.

Is it OBDII Chris?

I think I have an OBDII 2.0L Neuspeed chipped ECU somewhere I'll send ya for free..... If I can find it.

Looks good as always, and I am not impressed, as I expect nothing less from you  :t-up:

Yes OBDII from I think a 98. Let me know shipping and I'll kick you something for it if you find it.

Thanks, lol. It still needs a lot of work though. Think of how ol' Bill was before I did anything to the cosmetics. The mechanicals seem pretty solid though. I should be at the GTG this weekend for those that would like to see it first hand.

Probably about the same as yours. The 16v was faster than your car and I've cammed it since we ran, so it was a pretty big step going from the GLI to the GTI. It seems to have a little miss so I think I need to do plugs and wires. What you been up to anyways?

Glad I could recycle it.  :t-up: What year/model was your car that this engine came from?

Hey Chris, found your build thread!  Good stuff.  This looks pretty good in person, the paint in the bay came out nice ~ Chris rolled up in it yesterday just after I dropped off Cassy's parts.  Knew it had to be Chris when a lower'd GTI comes FLYIN' up.  He must have had a tingling' knowing that toys had just arrived.

Good work Chris, makes me wish I spent some quality time cleaning up the bay on my Jetta before the motor was dropped in there.

Hope you find something out there. It's big enough that you should be able to.

Gave that car a bath and found out that the coil doesn't like water. Yay for water and electricity mixing!  :banghead: Probably the small miss I was experiencing was the coil arcing through cracks.

Fuck that. I ripped the ignition driver off of the mk3 coilpack and hooked up one of my many standard coils I had laying around. Nevar again will I have to mess with it!

I realized that it's been ages since I bothered updating this thread. Since then I've done quite a few things to the car. Comfort wise I've added power windows, heated and powered mirrors, and swapped around some interior stuff. I had the heated Recaros in for a little while, but they're really showing their age so I pulled them out (foam has degraded on the bolsters and driver side seat webbing is ripped). While I wait to refurbish them I've installed confetti seats from a mk3 GTI. Drivetrain wise I've changed out the .89 5th gear for a .75. OMG that made a huge difference on the highway! I've added an AEG intake manifold with a filter on a stick, and some lightweight and adjustable timing gears.. Some parts I've acquired for future use include a supercharger off of a Mazda Millennium and a chipped Digi1 setup with intercooler from a Corrado. The only reason I'm going to be running a Digi setup is because it's the quickest way for the car to get  boosted. Eventually it's going to be replaced with a flexfuel Megasquirt setup. I'm hoping for next year, but I'll have to see. I've picked up a headliner from a Golf with a sunroof I'm in the process of fixing. The car is also rolling around on some BBS Mahles I've refinished that I picked up from Greg.

This supercharger was contracted with IHI and built by Lysholm. It's comperable to the Lysholm 1200AX as far as the internals are concerned, but the beauty of it is it's size. It's only about 6" wide and 4" tall. It shouldn't be too hard to fit in.

The wheels measure 16x7 ET23 in the front and 16x8 ET11 in the rear with 195/40 205/40 Falken ZE-912. I'm using Racelands 5x120 to 4x100 adapters to mount them. They stick out a fair amount. I was able to pull the front fenders to fit them, but the back needs some extensive body work to get them to work properly.

The intake manifold went in pretty easily. I still need to clearance part of the throttle body where it's hitting the hood. It's the little eyelet part you can see in the photo.

I've noticed, but we're either a modest bunch of people or we like to keep things under wrap until they're finished. Seeing some of the cars out there being worked on makes me wish those people would do a writeup on their builds. *cough* Dave *cough* Jeff *cough* Brandon *cough* It sure would make for some good reading and eye candy if they include pics.
