I could really use a hand...
« on: December 01, 2010, 07:59:09 AM »

I could use some help getting my car into the garage.

For the first time ever, the Jetta left me stranded.  Thanks to Smokestack for a ride home from Hartsel.

I got the car home last night and could only get it into the driveway.  Can any of you guys come over this evening and help me push it up into garage so I can find out what happened?

Did you get it in? I could swing by tomorrow after work (8ish) and give you a quick hand if not.

On another note, I saw an OBD1 ABA at the jy today.

Got it in, thanks guys.  Used Kellis truck to pull it uphill up the road, then just used the momentum to coast into the garage.

Next issue, or set of them.

Compression test:
Cyl 1 - 37 psi
Cyl 2 - 0 psi
Cyl 3 - 0 psi
Cyl 4 - 0 psi

Looks like the water pump failed and leaked out all the coolant.  I'm going to have to work on sensors to make sure I get better indications.  All I got was a flashing low coolant light, but the temp gauge stayed at normal.

Pulled the head and it looks good.  No noticeable damage to the head or headgasket.  I guess I need to find someone to check it.

There is some metal on top of the pistons, so I figure it got hot, pulled timing and went rich and washed down the cylinders and burned up the rings.  I am not sure if that is what happened or if it is even possible.  I'll pull the bottom end apart tomorrow evening and see what is going on.

Feel free to stop by and offer any insight you might have.

More than happy to help. I'd do the same for any of you too.

Sorry to hear that the engine is pretty much dead. Hopefully the head isn't warped, but if it is there's a 16v rocco at the yard with its head still. At $40 it might be better to pick that up instead of getting your current one checked and decked.

Thanks for the good words guys.  I have pretty much the entire motor apart in the garage.  Now I am stumped.

Must be a warped head.

I pulled the pistons out and the cylinders and rings look great.  They appear good enough that after I mic the block, pistons, and rings, I may very well put them right back in.

Thanks for the heads up on the head at upap, I may have to make a trip down there this weekend.  I was about to take mine to get checked tomorrow.

That is weird. Maybe the valve seats? With 0psi I'd expect holes in pistons, finger tight head bolts/studs and/or missing chunks of head gasket. Don't suppose you did a wet test too?

Nope, no wet test.  I figured that with so little dry, it really didn't make much difference.  About the only other thing I can consider is that the compression gauge was trash.  I bought it new, so I assumed it was good.  I'll stick it on the lawnmower tonight and make sure it works correctly.  I tightened is so tight on 4 that I couldn't get it out until I got the head off, so I know it wasn't leaking around the seal.  The pressure release valve could have stuck open I suppose.

... On second thought, your valve seal comment makes sense, Chris.  When I stopped, the head was so hot it was smoking, but not the block so much.  There were small flakes of metal on the tops of the pistons that I assumed were from the rings.  I wonder if the metal was from the valves and guides.

Small flakes of metal probably means it was from detonation. Aluminum burns in high heat and high oxygen environments, sending molten bits of metal everywhere in the combustion chamber. If there's no holes in the pistons there could be molten bits stuck to the exhaust and possibly intake valve seats makeing them stay open just a touch. You can rotate the cams and see if there's any chunks stuck to either the seats or the surface of the valve that touches the seats. Unfortunately it's more likely that the head is warped since it looks like it was overheated. You can try finding something to use as a straight edge (framing square could work) and lay it across the head to see if it is warped. If it shows up warped with DIY tools it more than likely is beyond fixing/milling though.

Didn't get a chance to turn the cams, but I did measure the head warpage.  I could get a .014" feeler between 2 -3 and 3-4.  Don't have max specs for the head, but the max tolerance for an ABA head is .003 every 6 inches in distance and .006 over the complete length.

Headed to UPAP in the morning hoping the Scirocco head is still there.

Thanks, Man!

Got the motor together last night.  Just need oil, coolant, and an intake mani put on and it should be ready to start.  The water pump was toast, the metal impeller chewed up part of the pump housing, so my guess is that the metal I found on the pistons was from the water pump housing.  Thanks Dave for letting me use that spare head.

Ouch! At least you're good to go now. BTW, I found my extra bracket to support the intake manifold. Remind me at the next meeting to give it to you.
