... But like i said im 17 and dont know this shit...

Hate to point out the obvious, but that right there is probably why he's being an ass. He's trying to offload a project he couldn't finish, not build it for you. Don't expect him to tell you everything you need. Be thankful that he's telling you what he's selling.

Like I said before, don't plan on using the harness. There were some minor and some major differences in the wiring harness throughout the years the 1.8t was used. The 6-speed tranny mounts doesn't mean anything unless you're dead set on running a 6-speed. Get a 5-speed and worry about a 6-speed later. Piece your interior prices from here at the U-pull-and-pay website. MK3 seats require some cutting and welding to fit a mk2. Call up other junkyards for the ECU, engine, and the corresponding wiring harness. Be prepared to drop $1k-$3k on that. Best Foreign is a good place to start.

yeah... well if you were to find a mkIV or mkV with a good 6 speed in a junkyard, and you paid $$400 - $500 for it, would you be selling it on vortex or CL for the same?

hell no!

You'd be gouging fuckers for that transmission.. .. just like anyone else would be.

I wouldn't be selling it. That's Greg's deal. I install the really cool things on my car.  8) When I did the 02a swap for my car I looked into an 02m instead. Junkyards around here that had them wanted over $900 for one. A 02j was going for at least $500 from the same places.

Looks like there's a 98 passat at Upap that might have a 1.8t. If you leave now you might be able to get it and only drop ~$400 for what you need.

the 16v is a good motor and fairly cheap compared to a 8V toget HP out of.....

Really? Where? Anything related to a 16v is at least 3x more expensive. Just look at the going rate for used heads, or the price of cams or turbo manifolds. 16v start out with more power and have a higher potential for more power, but you have to pay to play with the PL 1.8, the 9A 2.0, or especially the ABF 2.0 clone. For the money I sunk into just going stand alone on my 16v I could have installed a turbo ABA in it's place.

A turbo ABA is worlds better than a turbo G60. An ABA has a head that actually flows better than a kinked soda straw, has larger displacement, has better engine management, and a better rod ratio. The only "benefits" a G60 has is lower compression, and sodium filled exhaust valves. Trying to make a G60 as "good" (relatively speaking) as an ABA is expensive and hard, while lowering the compression of an ABA and installing new exhaust valves is easy. If you can get one in good condition (or just have a love for them) they're fun, but If you get one with the initial intentions of "building it" you're better off getting something else. With this particular G60 I wouldn't trust it if the charger isn't working. If the charger isn't working that probably means the apex seals are bad causing the internals of the charger to bounce off of each other, cracking each other, and sending little chunks of aluminum through the intake tract into the engine itself. Hence it probably isn't rebuildable and gives you good reason to yank the head off of the engine to get rebuilt and inspect the cylinder walls for scoring.

I was thining more along the lines about the early 8V's vs the 16V ... i forget about the newer ones....but then again anything mk3 and newer i want a VR......

Latest he said hed through in was acarpet kit, extra rotors, a 8v or 16v wiring harness, and a Steering box. And honestly he told me hed find any parts i needed for the extra price and started being an ass. He was going to source out all the parts i would probably need. He owns a vw race shop.

Does upap do prices based on the car? An engine harness looks to only be $30. Engine is $200 and the ecu is $30. Those are prices on their sight unless its different at the yard.

Nope... those are the prices.

You are shooting in the dark however with a junkyard motor.... especially a motor like the 1.8T which is an interference motor with a timing belt.

Not to mention sludging issues with the early motors...

Most junkyards have at least a 30 day warranty, including Upap (not on anything electric though). If you get a jy motor be ready to drop it in or get a good enough deal where it's not too big of an issue if there's something wrong. Timing belts are easy enough to check though.

if the passat is wrecked, chances are the 1.8T isnt trashed. If the car isnt wrecked, I bet the engine ate shit.

Pull the engine, every bit of wiring, every electronic part you can get your hands on and hope the blonde chick is working the check out.  The skinny mexican looking guy is tight about prices and not so easy to BS. (He worked at Advanced apparently ::)  )

Pretty stripped othher than that. A few misc interior peices.May go that route. He'll take payments. But thats $2000... but its a german 75 and clean!

Id still need

Seats
An alternator
Intake manifold
header
carb linkage
A 5 speed tranny

I gotta admit, if I had some 17 yr old kid asking me 8 billion questions and who has no gameplan at all for the car while I'm trying to run a shop and sell a car, I'd be an ass too. If he wanted to plan the project and find all the parts for it, he'd prolly just build the car up. Act like you're serious, I bet he'll be serious with you. Act like a tire-kicker with big dreams and no idea how to accomplish them, then he's gonna treat you like one.

If I were you, I'd step back, assess my skill level, my purpose for buying the car and then contact a seller when you're ready to buy. Not trying to be a dick, but selling cars on craigslist is the biggest pain in the balls and modified cars are even worse.

Tell me about it....

I had a dude offer me $500 for my 93 Cobra yesterday because "That is double the scrap value, and it need's $6K in work"

Think I treated him like a respectable, potential buyer?

No prob, but best bet is always to ask a couple questions, set a time to see it and then show up at that time. I just sold my beloved fastback and my god, the constant stream of questions and then them telling me they want it and then no showing or suddenly remembering that they have no way to transport it and no where to store it. It was even worse when I sold my friends ex-cop car crown vic since it wasn't mine, I didn't know much about it and it was listed for really cheap so everyone and their poor-ass mother were emailing me.

I know how easy it is to read someone else's FS project post and go "Hey, ya that looks cool, I bet I can get that baby up and running in no time" but if you can't honestly say to yourself "I am ready to go look at this car with a wad of money tomorrow", then hold off until you can.
