My new 94 Silver Arrow 4-Door VR6 Golf
« on: October 31, 2010, 08:25:38 AM »

I bout a 94 Silver Arrow 4-Door Golf with a VR6 swap. I got it for dirt cheap cause the bottom end needs some attention, and It doesn't come with a transmission.

~79k miles on the body
~95k miles on the engine

Picked it up for 2k and it comes with:
-Worked Head(Autotech cams and valve springs, Ruville lifters)
-Chain's And Guides done
-C2 OBDII Chip
-Neuspeed P-Flow
-Neuspeed Exhaust
-Turn 2 Motor Mounts
-Clone 2.9L Intake
-KW Variant 1 Coilovers
-Euro Bumpers
-CL Hatch Glass
-MKII License Plate Tub
-Shaved Door Handle Recesses
-Rolled/Pulled Fenders
-MK4 front calipers
-Eurospec front brake upgrade (11.3 Zimmerman rotors, 8.9 Zimmerman rear rotors)
-Mason Tech Skid Plate

The wheels and side skirts didn't come with the car.

Now the PO said that it's burning a whole lot of oil and it has no power. I'm thinking the piston rings are fried. If that's the case would I need to get the cylinder walls resurfaced? And get new pistons? I was going to get the Block rebuild kit from MGM Autohaus, but not sure if I need the pistons or not?

Mind you I haven't seen the car in person my buddy went and picked it up for me a few days ago. He said it runs and Idles but hasn't had a chance to go over it anymore than that, when he picked it up.

So anyone have any ideas on what I need to do for the bottom end? Also if you know anyone selling a VR6 tranny let me know.

Thanks for looking and I'll see ya guys when I get back from Iraq in Feb/March.

sick as sh!t!!!! don't jump the gun and buy parts tho, you gotta tear down and assess. also need to know under what conditions and how much it smokes. if it smokes like hell all the time and misses you never know, burned hole in a piston or something.  :t-up:

I had put in for a slot to go to Germany but I got put in a unit that would be deploying and would thus cut into my dwell time which is a no-no. I think I'm just going to get out and finish my reserve time I have on my contract. Probably stay in the Springs for a while.

Looks pretty good. Now, does it really come with no transmission or is it a blown transmission? Seems kinda weird.

It had a tranny but the guy had bought a EuroSpec 6speed tranny from eurospec.com and he originally want 3500 for it. I wanted the car but not the price so I told him to keep the tranny which is how I got it for 2k,plus it has the bottom end problem. And I left him keep some other stuff like a strut brace and sideskirts and wheels, so I took a bunch of stuff off the car that I didn't need, which lowered the price, but still got a hell of a deal from it, hah

I'd just buy a whole Vr for less than 500 thats been serviced (chains,crackpipe,w/p) and drop it in and call it a day.

Put the old motor on a stand and build it from the ground up with time.

I was very hesitant about getting the car without looking at it, but I really wanted a silver Arrow 4-door vr6 and this popped up for a good price.....and I felt if I had let it pass I wouldn't be able to find one  again, unless I did all the swap work which I didn't want to do. My buddy said the car was clean when he picked it up for me. He said some of the clear was coming off the hood, there was a small rust spot on the inner fender from it being rolled and pulled and having the tire rub it. Said the interior wasn't the best but I dont care I'll fix it all. I mean Its got enough stuff on the car that warrants the 2k price tag.

I think I'm going to take Brandon's advice and just buy a used VR6 and drop it in and then build the other one for VRT status.

Yea, I would have liked to do the same thing, but I didn't have 3k for it. I had 2500 and 500 had to go towards getting a tow dolly and tax tag and title stuff and hooking my friend up for doing all the running around for it. Otherwise I would have done it.

I found a used VR for 400 bucks in my home town , I'm probably going t pick that up and use the parts to get the other running, unless it's in good condition to be dropped in.

I'll be busy with this once I get back from Iraq, I'll have 2 weeks to get it running to make the drive to CO.

So far I'll need:
Transmission
Engine Block or Engine
Wheels(using my buddys steelies at the moment)

once i start this new Job i am going to look for a new h20 car.... i'm thinking a 4door golf and doing an ABA/AEB 20vT Frankenstein and a 6speed.
jetta front, euro bumpers, flares and strips, a nice set of poke/stretch, then slam it and call it a day.
Just have to find a cheap white mk3 4door with a perfect body.

Update:

I got the Eurospec 6-Speed tranny from the guy I bought the car from. So now It's got a 6-speed. My buddy did some snooping around the car and came to the conclusion that the piston rings are fried. Good news is he says the head is clean and in perfect working order. And everything else on the car is pretty fresh and shouldn't take much to make her glorious.

Now I have a question. What is needed to make the car a 2.9L?

I was looking at just getting a bottom end rebuild kit from MJM. But if I can get it to a 2.9L to match the intake, I think I would rather go that route.

You can bore it out and get oversized pistons to make it a 2.9. Considering it had low compression due to piston rings I'd imagine the cylinder walls need a good machining anyways.

Does anyone know an average price on how much it would be to get it bored out to a 2.9? And even if I dont go that route how much in general would it be to get the cylinder walls resurfaced?

Can't remember off hand, but it's not much to bore and marginally cheaper to have a machine shop hone the cylinders instead. What's going to get you is the price of the pistons. Really, if the piston rings are that bad the cylinder walls are worn enough to where the only right way to fix it is boring it and using oversized pistons. Doesn't matter how many rubbers you throw on, you're still throwing a hot dog down a hallway regardless of how "tight" it fits.

I don't think it's that bad of a situation. He said it only smokes above 4k rpm and it's not "smokescreen" status. He said it's down on power as well. I have to give him a call and see exactly what he said was up and what the compression test said.

I can get a complete bottom end rebuild kit with 82mm pistons for 890 bucks, from MJM Autohaus.

If worse comes to worse I can always call up this VW shop in my town and see how much they want for a long block(short block, i always forget which is which, the one with just the block no accessorize.)

Short block is the block with the rotating assembly (crank, rods, and pistons). Long block is the short block with a head and cams. A complete engine has the intake manifold and accessories. For $890 you're better off getting a good condition jy motor for a third of what that costs unless you're looking for more displacement.

Yea the car was in MD.

Dave those are def a little over my price range. I'm trying to get the car fully operational for under 5k. The whole Junkyard engine would be nice but the head is rebuilt already so I want to keep the head on whatever I do. I think I'm just going to call this VW shop and see what they want for a Shortblock and transfer all the shit over to that block, would most likely be cheaper as well.
