Jetta GLI's
« on: October 27, 2010, 07:22:50 AM »

I'm starting to look around for a replacement DD and I have time plus a friend in the dealer auto auction so I'm being picky atm. What year mk4 jetta gli came with the bbs wheels, body kit, recaro interior, etc? 2000 is the only year I've seen it but it can't be a single-year thing.

Hmm ok. Were they options? A lot of the ones I see are standard looking jettas with a 6-speed.

Ok, I couldn't really find anything out online and finding any gli's, let alone 1 that has the wheels, bodykit and recaros seems tough. I definitely don't want a plain-jane mk4 jetta. I'm trying to compile a list of cars that are new enough to be at a dealer auction and not sucky enough where I wouldn't mind them stock. So far I've got the 337 (aka 20th AE right?), passat wagon and gli on the list. They'll be tough to find in my price range, especially in manual, but that's kinda the idea.

there is a guy onhere selling a 337 for 6500...
the 337 has everything the gli did but silver only and came out a year or 2 before the 2th anny.
....also...the 20th anny gti had it in imola yellow, jazz blue, and tornado red

Yeah, but the mileage is higher than I want and I'm looking more to buy after I get my tax return. Just scouting for now. Good to know about the 20th vs 337.

Were the vr6 glis more stock looking and the 1.8T's more like what I'm looking for?

Yes, all the VR6 GLi's looked very stock and did not have the BBS wheels.  The 1.8T MKIV GLI's are the good looking ones you described. 6spd, recaro, body kit, BBS.   I think they were (Don't quote me) 2004 to 2005 in the 1.8T trim. Prior to that I think they were just the VR6 GLI's.

sorry have fat fingers.... yes they are R(the button on the right of the X)'s... not RX's, although RX2's did come on mk4's in 16" on the Wolfsberg edition.

Rc's are the wheels you are talking about. And it was the 2004.5 glis the were the 1.8t 6 speed with the options your are looking at. The 20th anniversary is different from the 337 in that they came with more aluminum trim inside and a model number decal, black headliner, different cluster, sunroof, color options of jazz blue, imola yellow and black magic pearl. 337's only came in silver. The only leg up the 337 had on the 20th was a lower amount built and bbs rc's. The 20th came with is aristo wheels (same wheels that came stock on the mk4 r32's).
Hope that helps!

Carlos you sound smart.

337's in stock form also had the BBS RC's shot peened I heard and are lighter and stronger than the RC's on the GLI? I imagine a 337 down the road will be worth a lot!

They are not any different, aside from the finish. RC's on a GLI are painted BBS silver. RC's on the 337 were shot peened with a clear coat finish.

04.5 GLI's are a dime a dozen on the East Coast. Pricing has come down quite a bit on them, but you will still pay close, or more than KBB value for one that is clean, with low mileage.

Good luck finding an unmolested 337 for the same $$.

20th AE's are nice too, and have all of the options you are talking about, minus the RC's, but hell... its only 20 bolts to change those out.

Awesome, thanks for all the info! That year should mean they will travel through the auction a lot and wholesale =  ;D

In love with this one but way outta budget. http://albany.craigslist.org/cto/2003237248.html

You say prices are low on the east coast, is $6500 for a 170k mi car as ridiculous as I think it is? http://albany.craigslist.org/cto/1965095918.html

Is this price more realistic? http://westernmass.craigslist.org/cto/1973460038.html

Also, if any car geeks are bored at their office jobs, you could help me expand my shopping list. ;)
Need:
~100k mi (less is better of course)
manual
sporty and/or a little unique
$5-7k

Wagons are cool, and I definitely prefer cars that are more angular than rounded (like mk3 gtis). Passat wagons, 1.8T glis and mk3 gtis with a vr6 are on the list so far.

Searched NYC and dealers are selling low mileage glis for $10-15k, so I'm thinking I prolly should put it on the bottom of my wish list. That's ok though because I found this! http://newjersey.craigslist.org/cto/1999113600.html

Found this one which seems pretty nice: http://albany.craigslist.org/cto/2008470275.html Seems like all the necessary maintenance has been done and I kinda prefer the vr6 to the 1.8T. I don't trust the high mileage turbo engines as much.
