G60 motor toast....
« on: October 26, 2010, 07:11:57 AM »

So got the Corrado running las tnight , ran great started right up and idled no problem idle was rough and kinda low but figured the car wass cold and hadn't ran in over a month , then on the way home it turned into a smoke machine again.

So once i got off the hwy my idle sounded like a subaru.... So after some research i found this to happen all the time and it's cylinder #1 .. so i start it yank the plug on it and yep nothing idle stays the same , i'm getting good spark. Oh and there is oil every coming out of the breather on the valve cover, which is engine blow by...

So now i need to rebuild this motor, Anyone know a good source for a as close to complete rebuild kit? I would just buy a long block but dont have the 3k for that....

Wait to buy parts until you tear it down.  Might just be a blown headgasket, or maybe rings, or one cracked piston, etc etc.  Bearings could still be perfect, etc etc.

I've done quite a few cheap (emphasis on cheap-ass) rebuilds in my time.   My lifted 84 dual t-case Toyota got new honed cylinders, new rings, new rod and main bearings, and a milled head, RV cam, etc etc.  I think I spent $500 total, and didn't even remove it from the truck or seperate it from the trans.  Quick and dirty.

I need to tear my G60 down and get a gasket set at least - one port looks like it got some moisture in there.   :-\

G60 motors are heavy duty versions of the brick-shithouse that is the VW 8V.  Something has to go horribly, horribly wrong to crack the block, or head.  Let us know what they find, and try to post some photos.

G60's are becoming older and not as sought after, so deals are out there to be found.  Craigslist is your friend.

headgasket is my bet. If it is the block, just build up a 2.0 G60!!!

The heads are the only real difference in a g60 compared to any other 1.8 8v right? Sodium valve stems that are a touch bigger and maybe bigger intake/exhaust valves?

I'd be really surprised if the gasket could leak anough to get 0psi on a compression test, unless a big ole chunk was gone.

No - the blocks are different, the rods are different, has piston squirters, etc.  And the head has the same sized valves as GTI/GLI 1.8s.

You could use a 8.5:1 block or 1.8 8V head on a G60 setup, I'm sure.  They are way over-engineered for normal duty anyway.

So the shop was able toget a bore scope in the cyl,s said they look really good so thinking its the head...

So i found a shop were i can bring the car and be able todo the work myself which will help on the $$ side of things...

I'm hopping its valves and no major damage....If so have it cleaned up and  replace all the valves, get the BBM stage 4 cam kit and install it and be back on the road in week or so fingers crossed....

Also i've had a few guys tell me ABA G60 . anyone got a clue what is involved with that cause i'm finding those motors cheap with low miles or rebuilt, my internet is F'ed at home so i only got this crappy gov computer so trying toget to half the sites is a pita....

ABA G60 sounds like an ABA bottom end, and a G-60 counter-flow head. I know when I was starting to research different option for upgrading the 16V motor, the ABA block, and 16V rotating assembly seemed to be the strongest option, without going to a 1.8T or VR6. There are a few things you would have to do to complete the swap, but it is pretty straight forward. Put both motors on an engine stand, clean up the ABA bottom end, and then swap everything over to it.

Might as well put a thicker head gasket / spacer in, and get the head work done if you are going that route.

Hell... might as well bolt a 16V head on.....

There is a LOT involved with the ABA g60 16V beast. Ask Jeff Swift.

Main point about the ABA bottom end is: strong bottom end, 2.0, and its simple. Im not sure what the final compression will be, but just run a spacer if its high.

Yeah, it would likely end up right around 10:1 if no spacer is used.  Combustion chamber volumes are pretty close between ABA head and 1.8 head, iirc.

Im pretty sure everything will be straight forward. The only issue is going to be that you will have to add some length to the downpipe. (ABA block will be taller)

Well there are differences between the two,the head will bolt up no prob... but there are holes in the blocks that are different and cause a issue when mounting brackets, plus i need to figur out the dizzy hole thing out...

TT is the solution for the distributor fitting, and likely the block breather blockoff.  Can't remember if you can use it on the G60 - on CIS apps you need the space for the warm-up regulator.

TT will also be able to tell you 100% what head gasket to use.  I think the ABA one is going to be what you need, as the bore is so much larger (relatively speaking) than the G60 (81mm vs. 82.5mm).  Ask 'em.

well they have the dizzy adapter , and the breather block off , the thing that worries me is how big the block off plate is cause on the G60 this is where the rear mount for the charger bolts and its just a small hole on the g60 block where as on the 2.0 its a pretty big hole and the adapter looks to be fairly thick... i guess i'll call them tomorrow and see what they have...

So i think i'm gonna use the 2.0 in the rabbit and rebuild the G60 motor manily cause i cant find a solution to the block off/ charger mount situation....

So BBm is the only place i found with Pistons but they only have two sets of OEM at $599. which i don't have right now or these:

http://www.bahnbrenner.com/vw_audi/products/479/BBM_G60_Forged_1_9L_Piston_Set    ... but i dont know what i would need todo toget these to work. Anyone got a idea?

http://www.bahnbrenner.com/vw_audi/products/2533/OEM_G60_Pistons      Factory spec...If anyone knows of somewhere else to look id appreciate it

Bahn Brenner makes the block off plate. Also Im PRETTY sure that TT will be able to do a block off plate. Its just a flat metal plate, it doesnt need to be 25mm thick.
