greg, is this something I may be able to use in the beetle. I don't know so I just asking?

No - even if the ratios or strength or something were desireable in the trans, its a front engine-front drive setup.  Turning it around to install in the rear would give you 4 revers gears and one forward.  Assuming it is a manual!  Might be an auto - hard to tell from the pics.

its a manual, it has a clutch release lever

Seen them in person - true NOS stuff.  Pretty cool, just not very desirable in the open market.

I am still interested in the block.  My present 1.7 is still a strong runner, but burns a little oil.  I have plans/minor-mod ideas and it would be great to drop them on a fresh block :t-up:

Honestly, I am the king of cheapass (Carlos notwithstandin g) and I looked at it a lot.  Even did the research to find the old Datsun 83mm pistons that would work with the 1.7 crank with a little wrist pin bushing work.  It simply isn't worth messing with.

Even a GX 1.8 would embarrass a built 1.7.  It costs much more to have larger valves put into a 1.5/6/7 head and then needs a bunch of port work to be as good as a 1.8 40/33mm valve head.  Put your money into a 1.8 and quit thinking about spending money on stuff that doesn't make sense or isn't worth it.

I'm not really making a "built" engine ;)   We have had these arguments before :P  by now you should know I don't like doing stuff "main stream" anyways :P

If you don't like mainstream, install a 2.2 Shelby turbo engine.
