The transmission is a 4 speed. Probably out of a dasher or Audi fox. ETKA shows that the engine part # was dropped in 96, so I'd imagine it's a 1.8 liter but I'm not sure.

Where'd you find this stuff?

My neighbor told me I could have them. He is a big block guy and will never use them.

Are they worth anything? I can bring to CO this coming week if it's worth it for me to pack them out there!

That engine doesn't look like a 1.8 to me - the oil pump is the older style.  I'd bet its a 1.5 or 1.6.  Probably not worth much, at least if you have to ship it.

The trans looks very old - you see the sticker that says "Volkswagen Audi NSU?"  That means it is likely from around 1970-1973.  And you see the driveshaft flanges?  I bet its a trans out an Audi 100 or something.

I'd be interested in taking them off your hands for a few bucks, but honestly, not much.

first glance I thought it was a 1.7L.. the only way to be sure is to find the displacement "stamping" in the casting on the back of the block

The block is a 1.7l out of a 81-84 jetta.  I cant get the tranny to come up anymore but I would assume it is for the same car.

Ah yes - the 'H' code instead of displacement.  Weird - never knew why they did that.

I guarantee you that transmission is NOT out of any A-series chassis (meaning A1 Rabbit, Scirocco, Mk 1 Jetta, A2 Golf/Jetta, etc.

Let me know if you want to swing by with them.  I've usually got a little cash to buy stuff like that.  I'm more curious than anything.

the trans has output flanges, not a driveshaft... if it came out of a "Front Engine" car its FWD, "rear engine" it would be RWD.  To the best of my knowledge, it would appear to be Front engine/FWD, I don't think Audi did a rear-engine car in that era.

a torque tube connects from crankshaft in the front of the car and it connects to the input shaft of the transmission in the rear. its for better weight distribution.  the 944, 928, that i know of are set up like that

here is a pic of a torque tube on a trans and the engine goes up front

not to mention (i cant see the pics here at work but i saw them at home) theres a starter divot and i believe the starter would be at the engine, not the transmission since the clutch is at the engine. :t-up:

greg, is this something I may be able to use in the beetle. I don't know so I just asking?

No - even if the ratios or strength or something were desireable in the trans, its a front engine-front drive setup.  Turning it around to install in the rear would give you 4 revers gears and one forward.  Assuming it is a manual!  Might be an auto - hard to tell from the pics.
