Parts amassing
« on: July 22, 2010, 08:34:08 PM »

My Front NOS Koni struts are on the way, along with the manual trans pedal cluster and GTI gauge cluster.  Matched with the rear NOS Konis I have, front big swaybar, cut the springs, Turbo Diesel Quantum Trans, - some parts are assembling to build a decent driver.

Yeah, I traded the Mk3 for a Vanagon Syncro, which is gonna get sold soon.  Got a Subie Outback for a driver for the wife, driving her Nissan Frontier until it sells, then get an older Cummins for me.

Gonna be at the Scount shop - be at my shop full time again next week doing the motor swap on Damiens Jetta, maybe getting the Fox a little less nose-bleed like.

Oh, and I didnt take a pic, but I got a Ford Probe 2.2 IHI Turbo today to replace the one on the Callaway manifold I have for the Fox.   Not much bigger, but it made around 150hp stock, should be good for 175-200 pumped up a little?  Eh.

Yep - exactly what I thought, just a different color combo.  Alpina/Martini combos are cool.  The guy agreed to a price shipped, now waiting to hear back.  Fingers crossed.  Got a set of black recaros for the Porsche yesterday, and a pair of blue Rabbit GTI seats too.  I will be up to my ears in seats pretty soon!

Is it even worth it, getting the 8v Flywheel lightened, and balanced, when you can just buy a 16V flywheel, off the shelf from any number of suppliers?

I seem to remember Swift runing inot extensive costs getting his flywheel lightened, when instead, it would have been cost effective to just buy a 16V lightened flywheel from techtonics....

You would be absolutely right if this were an A-series engine/trans setup, but no one sells lightened B1/2/X-series flywheels that I know about.

Also, the A-series flywheels are funky compared to 'normal' flywheels in that they have no center to clamp onto for normal machining, making it difficult, if not impossible for most domestic style machine shops to lighten.  More expensive, for sure, if they can do it.

The Dasher/Fox style flywheel starts out at around 16lbs, and my last one got down to about 12lbs.  Not super light, but its all outer rotating mass, and that's 4lbs - nothing to sneeze at.

When I see someone make an "off the shelf" upgraded B1/B2(4cyl)/BX chassis flywheel... I'll consider buying one.  Even 034, the "legendary" custom parts supplier for the early B Audi chassis doesn't have an aftermarket flywheel available.

Heh.  I bought a used aluminum race flywheel for the old 320i BMW.  Was crazy effin light.  Was worth more than I paid for the whole car when I bought it.

kewl, I don't think they compress nearly as much as say a Mk1 strut in the rear when you lower the rear end... but I want to make sure to get measurements and do a little research in case I need to find some custom ones

My Wagon rears might be different than your Dasher rears - not sure.  They are pretty short when compressed - WAY shorter than Mk1 rears.
