WTB mk2 2.0 16v hatch glass
« on: May 31, 2010, 06:59:04 PM »

Seriously looking for the mk2 2 liter 16v rear hatch glass that has the 4 holes (3 for mounting, 1 for the hatch wing brake light wiring) in it.
This would be a huge help if anyone has one.

It's strange... I was expecting to see a WTB for an early mkII westy glass, with no holes....

standard mkII glass should be fairly easy to come by. Check the local pull and pay yards. A1 usually has 2 or 3 mkII golfs

Hey thanks a ton guys. Wow, didn't even think there'd be a chance a new glass would be still available, but I'll look into it. Probably be slim to find an oem 2.0 16v golf in the yards but ya never know.

I was not talking about buying it from the dealer, I was referring to a place like Elite Auto Glass.

That glass is hard to come by in the junkyards. It was only on the 16v big bumper cars 1990-92 and some of the late 8vs - I think only in 1992.

Ya, rare in deed. It only came on the 1990-1992 16v GTI's.

Is that because of the 3rd brake light?

is this Harlan?  If so hope you have been doing well.  I know who has a few of these but not sure on shipping, I'll look.

Barry, it's the details holmes.  Who cares what other people see, it's what you see and what you know on your car that matters.

Hey Mike what's up? Things are good, hope the same with you. Just slammed trying to finish up my mk2 for the year. Was gonna try to drive up with you on the 13th this month and meet up with Robin, but too much left to do on the car still.

Any leads would be much appreciated. I've got a lead on a brand new one but haven't got a price yet. Hope to find out today. Give me a holler if you find something.
Take care

yeah.... I hear that. I saw a set going for $850 + shipping out of california... fuck that...

I'll live with fixed windows for that price...

Or I'll step up and pay to play... but that involves the wife, getting mad about money "wasted" on a bunch of "crappy" cars

Hey Mr London I'll shoot you an email here shortly.

Barry, I've also seen them on ebay. I think that and the Vortex are your only sources, unless maybe you contact The Tuner Shop. They may have ways of getting used stuff too.  I've bought from them...super cool place to deal with. I saw some Happich's up for sale on the Vortex about a month and a half ago going for about $600.

yeah... my brother is trying to talk me into buying stuff on ebay.de. I am skeptical, and dont like taking a chance at loosing money, but who knows... maybe I'll start.

Did you contact the dealership for your rear glass? they might be able to pull it, brand new from a inventory somewhere across the country.

Ya, never done the ebay.de. so I don't know how legit it could go down. But I have purchased things from other parts of the world thru ebay and never had a problem, so hard to say.

Currently working on sourcing a new glass from the dealer. I'll post what comes up. Still looks like a back up plan may be in order. However, I do know that Service glass can make one (even the '85), but it won't have defrost in it.

Who is Service Glass?

I am toying with the idea of getting a second hatch from a local junkyard, and shaving the wiper and nozzle off of it. If I had 85 glass with no lines in it, that would be pretty nice.

That way, I can still put my car back to OE if I wanted to....

Maybe that's Best Service glass over on Betty Drive.
Yeah they said all they need is a hatch glass to use as a templet, so for an '85 that'd be without holes. Then the glass is sent to Denver for tempered. No idea what price is yet, still waiting on some more info on new before I consider this route.

dude if they can make rear glass with no defroster, I'm all over it.  I'd sell you my 85 glass for a song.  I'll call you later.

Mike... have you looked into polishing the defroster lines off of your glass?

I know you can remove the actual defroster elements, but I have heard different stories about how polishing the lines that remain can and cannot be done....
