Greggearhead is getting a shop
« on: May 25, 2010, 09:55:41 AM »

I have decided to jump in a bit deeper into the self-employed category, since jobs are few and far between these days.  So, I have a shop lined up (starting June 1) just off Nevada and Fillmore.  Nothing too big or fancy, but it will allow me to do my ebay/craigslist parting out and fix/flip stuff much more efficiently, and turn my garage back into a normal garage.

I'm hopeful I can afford a lift right away, as that is key to me being more efficient, but either way, I'll have a commercial location and much more room to get stuff done.

For anyone in the club needing a business location to ship something to, I'm happy to provide that.

Professionally, I'll be doing most of my own stuff (buying vehicles, fixing and selling them, parting them out) but will also be happy to look at doing jobs for others like I have in the past as well (motor swaps, brakes, etc) if people don't have time/space/desire to do it themselves.  I should be able to give people good deals, but I am in it to make a living!

I'll post up the exact address and welcome people to stop by just as soon as I am over there, and then hopefully have a tiny little open house after I get settled.

Thanks man - its a little scary, but I'm excited about it.  Even if I get another corporate job, I'll likely keep it for a hobby shop.

worse case... "split" the rent between a couple of guys.  I have a buddy in Longmont that splits a shop space with 3-4 other guys, each person has plenty of area for their resto-work/engine swaps/etc etc

I've always thought about doing this, especially since I can't seem to find a place with a garage I can afford.

Congrats Greg!

I guess you wont be needing that 220V at your house now, eh?

If you are looking at lifts, I can make a recommendation ...

Stay away from 4 post lifts.

You can find 2 post frame lifts in the same ballpark price, if not cheaper. My dad got the lift that is in my garage now from Harbor Freight for $2200.

Chris - I am just kinda feeling this out as a hobby shop, so feel free to PM or call me or stop by and chat about options.  You are very talented and qualifed to do quite a bit, so I would be willing to entertain some options with you.

Barry - you aren't kidding.  The only reason for a 4-post is to get lifted parking space, IMO.  9000lb. 2 post lifts with no drive-over center piece are $1600 DELIVERED.  That's $1600 I need to make back, but once you use a lift, you always want one.  Nice garage, btw.

I agree. It is great, and I have no problems leaving one car parked over another for long term storage...

When it comes to suspension or exhaust work (as shown) it's quite the pain in the ass....

Oh well... jackstands might not have been retired when I moved home, but the creeper certainly has been!

Heh heh.  What I am tired of is that I get a vehicle to do something to, then 2 or 3 more smaller things pop up that I can turn quickly, but have to do outside in the dirt.  No more.  I did a clutch job on a Toyota truck for a friend and it rained and snowed on me while I was doing it, and because it was in the dirt, couldn't use a jack.  Very doable, but not very enjoyable.

Gearhead Greg has a nice ring to it too...

So on your services rendered price list, is 6 pack going to appear anywhere on the list?

Im sure there will be some sort of service that the price would be 6 pack... maybe that could be your price to rent out a lift? 6 pack per hour? lol

I think this could work out for you pretty well man. Interested in becoming a sponsor for DATR?

parts = raffle prizes!   I would suggest though that you do certificates for $XX.xx worth of parts. That way the winner has a shot at getting something they can actually put to use.

sweet man.. i have a small scissor lift that i own that i been using as project use on and maintenace.. its not the best but works for smaller cars.. i will be PCS'ing to colorado with it.. i could let you use it for the time being tell i get things situated.. i will be getting a small apartment without a garage :( tell my house sells in north carolina.. its been on the market for a while now.. and i hope it sells soon... because tell then.. my living expense it limited.. so im just going to deal with a small 1 bedroom apartment for the time being so i can keep my mod cash flow alive... i love working on cars and projects to much to cut that out of the pie...but ya.. its not really heavy.. only weighs about 200 pds.. and uses 220volts to lift up... its rated at like 7,500 pds.. and i was surprised how much it is rated for really.. but i beleave it.. i lifted my old Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel truck with it.. to pull the transmission to rebuild it.. and it held fine.. i had like a million jack stands layed out around me so if it did start to come down it would be supported by them... but it was true and strong all the way through.. even held it overnight without even creeping down an inch.. i was really surprised... but ya i would be putting it into storage otherwise.. tell i get a garage...

For anyone that wants to stop by - the address is 221 East Polk St, Unit D - behind Murphy's Tavern (actually right behind the Porn shop).

Its a big brown building with 4 units - mine is the one with a brown overhead door with one white panel at the bottom.  Moving my tools over tomorrow, so I should be here most of the time from now on.  =)

Here's a few pics - still cleaning up and organizing, obviously.
