Project Jetta
« on: March 27, 2010, 08:37:17 PM »

Well with the GTI sold as of 4ish hours ago.  I'm starting to put into motion my Jetta build plans.  Unfortunately the Wifey claimed 1/2 the $$ from the project (hey, we got bills too) and so I have to take it a little slower than I wanted, but isn't that life...

First up, what do you guys think.... trying to pick out what front end I want to use.

Early Westy

My personal fav, Mk1 Scirocco

Or the old-faithful Quad Round.

Could also do Single rounds.  Kinda like the look of it.  Let me know.  I'm undecided.  My plans will be for a unique mk1 Jetta.  so....let me have it.

Personally, I like the Euro Jetta setup that runs larger square singles, and keeps the Jetta fenders and turns.

The early westy setup (top) is bitchin, but would require fenders and paint.

No, from what I remember, its black(ish) ~ but the paint is shot.  I just use lighter colors on dubmodder to get an idea of what the body lines will look like.

Greg, I do like the Euro jetta grill, but it don't know where I can find one.  That guy I told you about out east has an Early Westy grill on a 4-dr rabbit that I can highjack.  I was trying to find something that wouldn't require changing the fenders (simply because I don't want to drive it around for the next year without with non-matching fenders, looks bad IMO).  That's how I came up with the mk1 Rocco grill.  I had an 81 S back in the day.  Anyway.  I'm all for keeping the fenders if need be, just don't like the quad squares.  Not sure why, just don't.

That's what spray bombing is for. ;) For less than $10 with sandpaper and spray paint you can have matching fenders. If you don't put any clear coat on it they'll match the paint on the rest of the car by the end of summer.

The 1st. Single lights give it a wider stance. Nice...can't wait to see this.

Found a guy on Vortex that has euro grill and lights...Here's what it'd look like with euro grill and my old Holkenhiems (sp) ( I do like those wheels).

I hear ya - because it isn't a must-do-right-away mod, you can wait for a good deal on lights and grille to fall in your lap, or start watching ebay.de for smoking deals on the setup.  Beware - shipping from Germany sucks balls and they don't know how to package.  My Porsche Recaro I just got took 6 weeks and was packaged like he didn't have opposable digits.

The Early westy frontend would be badass and 'easy' with your buddys supply, barring the painting of the fenders.  I've been messing around with rattle canning forever and ready to step up and paint something real with a compressor and gun sometime soon.  Don't want to lose my virginity on your Mk1 tho...

Where's 337 Greg?  He around anymore since he sold his 337?  He was dabling with painting and pinstriping and stuff way back when.  Who painted the Super Coupe back in the day - Pat?  London?

That's what I'm thinking, Not sure if the Euro grill will work out $$ wise, at least not now.   Looked up the guy's profile and he sells the stuff for like $400 per grill.  That's a bit much for my blood.  I think Duane will let me have that early Westy stuff for under $100 w/ fenders.  Gives me a good reason to take you out to his place ~ knowing you, you'll be in heaven.

As for paint, the 'stuff' on the shell sucks, so its not going to hurt my feelings either way.  I want to see if I can at least polish that up tho ~ maybe it'll turn colors and become pretty.  If not, I say why not give it a go and see what happens.

I know a guy on Vortex that has a few mk1 Rocco grills, shoot me a PM if you want his name.

Lets get back to what this thread was started for.  And that means a road-trip.

She don't go fast, but she goes...

50 miles later, I'm at Don's Sportcar Salvage....

....where they have one of these...

Kachow!

Boom-baby!

Spec sheet?

Loaded up and ready to go.

My international goes international.

So, since this build looks like a 'look what I can do with dubmodder' ~ lets look at one of the shells I'm looking at getting for the build.  Namely this 1982 Mk1 Jetta.

Its so cool, it even comes with a hood scoop ~ I hear its a Kamei (sp) prototype!

Front end.

Custom high-flow exhaust.

Suspension work

And color.

In the performance catagory,

a 1993 GTI ABA block swap.  But I'm letting the PO keep this motor-trans and will be building the 16v above for it.

With custom wiring.

No rust in the bulkhead.

But there is funkiness in the rain tray.

Sooper cool wheels tho...

Interior is nothing to write home about, but here are some interior pics.

Front seats.

Rear seats.

Door cards look okay, maybe a little work.

Back door cards, lookin' better.

Dash ~ needs the most help.  When I first saw this Jetta, the entire dash wiring harness was puking out ~ but the owner put it all back in place when we started talking.  Not too bad, but definitely needs work, especially an instrument cluster.

I should clarify, this is one of a couple Jetta's I'm looking at.  As long as its not destroyed when the owner pulls the engine/trans out, I'll pick it up.  Otherwise, I've got a couple other options available.

Dude - if you get that one, I would keep the blue and go with Helios Jetta Recaros.  THey would match pretty close and make the fronts almost perfect.  I love Helios, though, so I am biased.

If you don't go for it, I am interested (not at his price, but still).

if you can get the car WITH all of the ABA wiring.... DO IT.

Then buy a BBM fuel rail and run your car on something better than CIS

Helios seats would be awesome in that car. Hopefully the "kustom" hood scoop and foam sealant doesn't carry over through out that car.

As a side note, I wonder if a little bit of Buffalo Bill lives on in that car. Look at the wheels.
