Scirocco build...lot of pictures
« on: January 29, 2010, 04:26:53 AM »

1987 8v Scirocco. I was adding this to another thread of mine, but I think it needs it's own thread now.
original engine had about 230k on it. clutch was fried. was burning oil at the rate of about a quart of 20w-50 a week. leaked everything. So I found myself a cheap 83 gti engine, new clutch with a 16v pressure plate, new oil pan and got to work. Been in progress for about 2 weeks now.

Rammstein ftw

working on the gti engine

making some extra room

replacing drive flange seals

nom nom

Wheels I'm using for the summer

alrighty, I need to finish the drive flange seals, then I can attach the trans to the engine, and then drop the engine back in, then the process of rememebering what goes where.

couple small updates

little messy

LOTS of leg room now

and got those valve cover hold down things on after the paint dried.
well, I'm gonna try and finish the transmission tomorrow so I can attach it to the engine, then start stripping the old engine for usable parts.

tore into my old engine today

pulling off everything I need for the new engine. is there a way to pull the fuel injectors off without the pulling tool? I think im gonna pick one up tomorrow..but just curious.

You can use vice grips and a pry bar!

I found that a flatbar worked a bit better for me. I'd stick the forked end around the injector where the line attached to it and pried against the valve cover.

Looks like fun, but I'll have to agree with Ed. It'd look nicer if the rest of the engine was as pretty as your painted parts, but as long as everything works you can drive it down to the car wash.

Thats what I thought.  Are you gonna spray down the block or clean it up before dropping it back in?

I would at the very least de-grease the engine, I did on the dasher, doesn't look "show" perfect but it sure looks nice :)

You are taking the time to do all of this.... do it right!

Is this car your daily driver? If it is, I can see why you would want the drivetrain back in as soon as possible... If not, then put that motor on a stand and hit it with degreaser and a wire brush wheel.... It takes some time and effort, but a clean block is always nice to look at.....

I really wish I had a separate DD, cause I would love this project to be nice and slow. and done right in every aspect, but unfortunately I need it done ASAP.

A quick trip to a spray wash with degreaser will make a world of difference and not take more than a couple hours

gunk degreaser would work good too with a hose if you have a good place to drain or dispose safely.

I feed my old coolant to the neighborhood squirrels.  Place it where only they can reach it, surrounded by cereal to lead them there.

used my hoist and a strap around the flange, and stood on the transmission while I pumped the hoist up..damn that thing took a lot to come out.

When it was on the edge of coming off, I reached down to move the strap some, and it popped out, nearly hit me in the face  =\

new seal

so how can I tell if this is good or not?

Looks fine to me. Did you take the c-clip off before you tried to pull the flange out? Closest I've ever had an issue pulling one of those out was I had to take a small hammer and tap the edges while I pulled on it.

Be careful moving that thing around without a flange in it. There's a brass cone washer that likes to fall out, and if it's missing your transmission will chatter.
