NEWBIE
« on: January 21, 2010, 05:34:09 PM »

Hey everyone. I'm wanting to venture into the water-cooled world. I"m 16 with alot of knowledge on air-cooleds but very little about water-cooled. I'm looking to buy a 1984 rabbit L that has an 8v 1.8 in it right now. he has a 1.8 16v motor that's torn down.

Here's a link that shows the car and motor. Any insight on the buy would be great. Thanks

Zach

Welcome Man
you got a air cooled still?  man looks like a good little mk1  i would ask why he tore the 16v apart but it looks like he took the time to separated it all out so as long as its all there and good
looks like a good deal
speaking of a good deal what does he want for it

I'm definitly buying it. My grandpa is giving me some trouble on the motor cause he says that he"s worried i won"t have the money for it. I would really like to have a project motor though. The motor is complete other than the oil pan and fuel dizzy. He said i could use a few things from the 8v but i"m not completely sure what. it needs a thrust washer or something i think. How much does a freshly rebuilt 16v go for anyway? it might be a good investment. even if i don"t swap it.

I bought my stock 16V tranny with plug wires, transmission, new lightweight flywheel and new clutch with a radiator for 500 bucks.  That was a hell of a deal.

I would be buying it for $300 on top of the price of the car and still have to put the head back together, TB, buy a new distributor, thrust washer plugs wires and i'm sure alot more. but then i would have a complete motor that i could throw in and have fun with. But selling it probably won"t get my money back. Not sure what to do. I have a pretty tight budget cause i haven' had a job since this summer. no time to work when you go to highschool. I have a bunch of air-cooled stuff to sell but no takers.

Like i said, i don"t know much about water-cooled's. But if i did do the swap could i use all the stuff in the engine bay other than the harness? the motor comes with the right harness. Could i use the fuel dizzy and radiator etc? I know it's the same bloc so it bolts right up.

Welcome to the madness. I made the jump from a 66 bug to an 06 TDI years ago and haven't looked back since. It's nice having a Volkswagen with a working heater.  ;D

It doesn't look like there's anything special about that 16v engine. No aftermarket cams, no headwork, old valves, old lifters, etc. I wouldn't offer him any more than $100 for that engine in the condition it's in, and that's only because of the intake manifold (throttle body comes out on the driver's side that makes the install easier, but it's not impossible without it). Usually a junkyard will sell you a complete engine for $100-300, and as long as the timingbelt isn't snapped the engine should be good. Walk on this engine though, unless you can get it for a great deal ( less than a $100).

The rabbit looks pretty nice though. That rust is a little worrisome. How much are you trying to buy it for?

$1000 for the car with GTI 8v and $1300 for car with 16v. Sounds like alot for a torn down motor with original parts and nothing fancy done.

I dont think 300 for the 16V is out of the question... I paid 75 just for my intake manifold. Is the engine a 1.8 16V or 2.0 16V?

good looking rabbit. Not a terrible amount of rust. Have you been able to drive it yet? Shifter feel sloppy? Clutch pedal stick, does it engage pretty quickly? Steering wheel straight when you drive straight? Engine have any leaks (completely normal =P) wheel bearings making any noise. Try and get it on a lift to check out underneath before you buy. Good luck! Hopefully this MkI will be good to you.

You should hit up the guy and see if he will sell the 16V at a discount. You can get about 100 or more for the head alone.

He was saying that $300 is as low as he would go for the motor. Has this ever happened to anyone? I put the car in reverse and after i put it in first. It wasn"t ingageing all the way. I popped the hodd and saw smoke coming from the trans axle.

My grandpa is taking it to steeve mills race shop to get it checked out. I want to see whats going on with the whole car. I drove amazingly coming from boulder to manitou but now it"s just moody. haha. it needs suspension work but one day i plan on getting some better struts and lowering springs. I'm going to look for some BBS's this weekend. Hope i can find some for cheap with decent tires so i don"t have to ad that to my exspences. I'll post up some pics when i clean it. Maybe i"ll do that after school tomarrow if i have it back from the shop.

OOOOOOOHHHH yeah! that stuff stinks. the clutch let out real high so that"s probably the problem. The shop said that one of the tie rods was loose, needs new tires, an alignment, the motor needs a tune up, and something else. i can"t remember. But i have a new gas tank to put in from an 84 rabbit gti. the one that"s in it has a bad pick up. It likes to stall on right turns. haha. that"s imbarising. this weekend if i have the time i want to find some nicer 4X100 wheels to put on. maybe i can find some that have some decent tires. But i want some low pro tires.

If I were you, I would go to the local parts store, get plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and fuel filter first. Then you can go looking for some nicer wheels with better tires. I would also look into getting that tie rod fixed, then an alignment. last thing you want is A) flying out of control on the highway cause your tie rod went out B) your new tires wearing badly cause of a bad alignment. SO with that said, I would probably get the tie rod/alignment done first, then the tune up parts (that part can be done within an hour) THEN get your wheels/tires. How bad are your tires anyways? if need be, I have a couple 4x100 tarantulas with decent tread you can slap on your front to hold you over until you get better tires.

And as far as your clutch letting out high, try adjusting your clutch cable some, if it doesn't work out, you'll probably need to do a clutch job. I can show you how as I am doing one right now if you wanna swing by sometime.

it looks like it"s been driveing with camber for a while. mostly just the front left wheel. I'm guessing that that's the side with the loose tie rod. Damn... i was going pretty wuick in that thing coming back from boulder too. But yeah i was thinking about doing all the things you said in that order. I do need to get some new struts and springs. I want to get those eibach lowering springs if there still availible. the ones for $125 in the for sale section. i was thinking maybe some GR=2 strusts. something cheap but help with handleing.

bad picture. but these.

When I get home from PT I'll post a picture of them with a real camera.
