I think one gasket is for a hydraulic head and the other is for a solid lifter head?

Am I right? Did I win the jaeger fridge?

freekydeeky.... the HG is essentially the same for all 1.8 8vs, and most (all?) 16vs... hells, I'm using a Steel ABA gasket on the Dasher's 1.8.  The major diffs between them and the "stock solid lifter" gasket have been bore diameters and thicknesses (oh and the useful alignment pins  ::) ).  I am not sure at all what gasket you have there....  I'd have to check, but I think maybe the Audi bubbleblock??

edit... for curriosity sake, exactly what engine (and head combo if different than stock) did the old gasket (and new gasket) come from?

and just to be sure... because there were differences in manufacture of gaskets... your head would not seal at the oil drain?

The banjo bolt on the 5th injector? I got some various banjo bolts kicking around somewhere. I'll dig them out in the morning.

Woo! head gasket done...

battery was dead...charged it, put back in and turned key "click" and batt is dead again...?

then when jumping the beast i got it to crank....but no start...plugs are getting spark (ye ol' plug on block trick) i have fuel at least to the dizzy (loosened a line and it sprayed out) and the air is all there...

only thing i can figure is im not getting spark at the right time??

Even though you probably didn't touch the distributor, if you didn't get the intermediate pulley in sync with the cam that could be your problem. Set the engine to TDC and see if the rotor points to the score mark on the distributor that designates No. 1 cylinder or if it points to the #1 terminal post of the cap. If it doesn't point to the #1 wire then twist the distributor and swap plug wires till the rotor points to the #1 contact on the cap. Double check your cam timing while you're monkeying with things.

i checked and everything lined up... buut i cant check the bottom end without pullin the whole nine yards... nonetheless i think the cams are off by a tooth whether retarded (like this situation) or advanced i dont know...it cranks fine for a second and then one cylinder goes poof out the intake...

...im gonna have to pull it all aint i?

one cyl goes poof out the intake.... plug wires, check the order of dem plug wires ;)

1-3-4-2 :t-up:

also verify that when at #1 TDC, your rotor is in deed pointing at your #1 plug wire ;) ;) ;)

oh... and you don't need to "tear everything out" to check for TDC on your bottom end
