Thanks, but I'll be ok. It's a 1/2 mild steel rod. It's a bit overkill for a dinky little car and it has some bendability to it. I could probably send it through another "accident" or two and be ok, but I plan on replacing it in the next month or so.

I found out that the battery had slid into the PS reservoir and cracked it. I went down to the JY and scored what looks like a NOS PS reservoir and the trim piece I was missing. :)

Oh, and the starter went up in a cloud of smoke today. Yay for old parts failing.

see... that will learn ya :P

I was 0 for 3 on JY starters for the Dasher...

I found that a lifetime warranty starter from Checker was 1. local (easy returns & exchanges) 2. less expensive than even AutoHausAZ 3. Lifetime warrantee vs 1 year on a "new" Bosch 4. and no FUCKING SHIT SHIPPING to deal with...  Had in my hands within 4 hours of ordering it from the Checker across the street from work.  YMMV

Well, that lasted all of a day. If it wasn't for the lifetime warranty I'd never buy anything from the "big" autopart stores. I've never had much luck with junk I've bought from there. I had a car that I had to replace the intank fuelpump every three months using the lifetime warranty till I got hold of an OEM one. That lasted 3 years until I sold the car.

So tomorrow I get to replace the starter with the car sitting on an ice covered road.  ::)

I can, but on mk2s the starter bolts hold the front motormount to the engine.  Have to be able to get a jack under the car to hold the motor up.

for shits and giggles... you might also want to check the condition of your ignition switch, wiring at the steering column, wiring at the starter, and presence of the correct voltage at the starter solenoid wire when cranking.  One "modification" I made that made a huge difference in cranking was to use a 40A relay to trigger the starter solenoid, using the original solenoid wire to trigger the relay.  Went from a mediocre experience every time I turned the key to a distinct solid turnover every time.

I started with using a GM IAC stepper motor then later used a PWM Bosch 2 wire idle valve. FYI, the build instructions for megasquirt setup the Fidle circuit as a on/off only control. You have to modify the circuit and add a transistor to do pulse width modulation valves. What are you trying to use?

i think a regular digi-1 idle solenoid will do for now. will it handle the on/off crap well? i dont care too much about pwm.

No, it won't handle it. It'll either burn up or won't shut off fully. If you want it to do just on/off you need to get some type of solenoid. The purge solenoids for the charcoal canister off of Motronic equipped Volkswagens would work.

does megasquirt need to run an isv? does the ms not have a idle tuning parameter? my 034 idles fine with tuning, idle fluctuates between 920-1080, no need for an isv.

You don't need an ISV on any standalone, but it sure makes cold starts (especially in the winter) easier on you. I know plenty of people that never bother to run one on a MS install and have no issue outside of having to give it some throttle while really cold. It's all in how you tune your warm up settings, idle bins, and even a bit to do with IAT timing and fuel %. The sucky thing about cold tuning is you can only tune it while the engine's cold.
