1.8 T Stock Intercooler capability?
« on: April 28, 2005, 06:06:50 PM »

Because they are cheap and relatively plentiful, and the outlets and sizing are what I need, I want to use a 1.8T intercooler for the Dasher.

Something just like this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=38634&item=7970510851&rd=1

I am not a 1.8T guy, so I was wondering how much power these are generally capable of - at what point do they become a restriction in the system?  180hp, 200, 220?  I would like to make 200-220 in the dasher and a low-boost 2.0 should be able to do that without breaking a sweat.

there all right, will make 200hp no problem, but even at that hp you still have a heatsoak problem, when i turboed my 77 audi fox, i used a audi 5k intercooler with rewelded endtanks, i still have it dont know if its something that might help, it fit right in front of the radiator

Was that a brown Fox?  If it is I saw you run at Bandimere years ago.  I laughed my ass off when it laid the smack down on a beautiful white A2 GTI.

I planned on mounting it on the passenger side in front if the fuel metering and manifolds - making for a very short airflow path: out of the turbo, 1.5ft, into the bottom of the intercooler-out the top of the intercooler, 1ft, into the throttle body.

I have a number of motorcycle cooling fans that would work well, and am not against mounting a water-mister to it as well.

Would you mind if I PM you and ask you some more questions about that car?  Don't want to bug you.

For 50 bucks you can have the two stock IC's off my s4.  If you get creative you could make it into one bigger core possibly.

I wouldn't waste your money.  A chipped 1.8T will heatsoak that thing.  There HAS to be a better intercooler available.

Pretty sure two intercoolers from an S4 will cover a turbo Dasher...

Well of course there are better ones available.   If I was building a 300hp engine I would pay the money for a custom unit.  But cost on the Dasher project is a huge issue.  I would love to have this turboed and "done" and have less than $1000 in the whole car.

Hell, if I was building a 300hp car I would have standalone and a bunch of other stuff, too.

Now, I am by no means a 1.8T expert, but I would bet that the intercooler isn't in the best location for airflow, and that the air has to take a lot more twists and turns to get to and from it.  Being that I am going to mount it directly behind the front grill, and mount a motorcycle radiator fan to it, I bet I won't have the heatsoak issues.  If I do, I can always get rid of the cheap 1.8T IC and upgrade then.

The locatation is no doubt  a major factor in why it sucks so bad in the 20V.  There was a long techy article (thread) on the  TEX about a HUGE SMIC, it still sucked when compared to a FMIC.
AS long as you mount it up front, then for the cost, it definately won't hurt to try.  You can usually get them for the cost of shipping.  You might think about a mister as well, the two might be enough.

well location is a killa on the stock 1.8t for heatsoak, but it doesnt help that there plastic and poor quality

now they will work ok for your app, but if you still mount it on the right side of the engine it gets damn hot over there, so even if you have decent air flow, theres still heat on the back side

if your going to use a air/air intercooler put it in front of the radiator, if your going to use a air/water put it on the right side by the air box, and if you use a air/water you can run a much smaller size of intercooler because of there design

yeah air/water setups are almost double that of a air/air, due additional radiator, water tank and pump for the system, and a crap ton of lines, but they are more effective, at low speeds, and the fact that the intercooler cost as much as a huge ginormous front mount spearco

an air/air intercooler with a good core is going to be best bang for the buck on any street car
