have spark, no fuel. FPR? 12v VR6 content
« on: September 30, 2009, 11:48:56 AM »

i went to start my car, and it turns over, but no start. car is a MKIV GTI 12V. ive had a recurring CEL that alternates between too lean and too rich. car definitely has electrical, but for some reason isnt getting fuel. im thinking it could be a bad fuel pressure regulator or a bad fuel pump.

ive got a friend who seems to think it could be the alternator, but with it cranking over, i dont think electrical is the problem. i havent had the alternator checked, but he could be right, and the CEL may be unrelated to the starting issue.

any ideas?

I don't see how the alt. would be a problem at the moment.... if it's cranking it has juice, which means it would start and run until the battey dies. Have you checked the coil pack?

Hmm. After going through like four weeks of hell with the same problem on my 8v, I feel your pain! Can you hear the fuel pump prime when it should? (I know on my mark 4 it primes when I open the door sometimes, or when I turn the key)

When was the last time you changed the fuel filter? Check the lines to make sure you didnt break a clip on the fuel filter

But back on the subject

1st check to see if there is actually any fuel coming out of the feed line before the rail when you crank it. MK4's are known for killing fuel pumps, and fuel pump relays. Its the black hard line by the pass shock tower. It has a quick disconnect on it. Pull it off and give it a key on and crank real quick, if fuel shoots up it has fuel.

But also based on your codes you have a bad MAF sensor, which VR6's in their shittyness will sometimes not start or start and die.

Yeah, definitely pick up some crc maf cleaner and see if that fixes you up first... quite possibly the easiest potential fix.

now isnt there the potential to unplug the MAF and still be able to start the car?  if im able to do that, i guess i could narrow it down there.

ok, heres my plan of action for tomorrow:

step 1: check MAF sensor
step 2: check fuel pump relay
step 3: check fuel filter
step 4: check fuel pump itself

Well your MAF is bad on a VR if its throwing rich and lean codes NO questions asked. And you will not be able to check the MAF unless the vehicle runs so that you can watch the g/s readings w/vagcom

Just make sure you have fuel spraying out of the line for reals that is 1st

ok, i confirmed that the fuel pump is priming.  i unplugged the maf and tried to start, and no start, so im ruling out the possibility of a bad maf.  going now to check for the fuel coming out of the fuel line.  if no flow, im going to do the fuel filter.

And you are positive that there is spark? A strong and steady one the whole time you are cranking?

Check codes and see if you have a engine speed sensor fault, or a cam sensor fault.

VAGCOM to see if your getting a Crank Position Sensor reading?

usually, the fuel pump relay turns off if there is no spark... designed to prevent a fire if the engine stops in an accident.

I would put money on a bad engine speed sensor.

If no engine rpm, ecu turns off injectors and spark.

Fuel pump will still run, and coil is powered by fuel pump relay

Since he is getting fuel, and the coil is hot... it may have something to do with the engine speed switch. If that is bad, when you try to crank wont the RPM not show up? I am not very vagcom knowing... Also Mike, do you have a lot of keys on your ign key? I heard a lot of weight from that will make the ign switch go bad.

Immobo system will make a vehicle start and then die, each time if its kicking in.

If it never fires its NOT immobo

If he is getting fuel pump, and coil power most likely not an ignition switch. Both of those are fired from ecu, after the key signal is given

heres the latest.  ran the vag com, and only relevant code i got was

17978 - Engine Start Blocked by Immobilizer
P1570 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

tried a couple immobilizer clearing techniques found on the vortex; ie. unplug the battery for 10 min, or leave key in on position for 15 min. but still nothing.  i have checked power at the spark plugs themselves, and there is nothing.

im at a loss.  anyone?

as far as the engine speed sensor;  where is this located on a 12v?  i poked around a bit with a flashlight, but didnt see anything that resembled such a sensor.  im pretty sure i found the cam sensor though.

While you had vag-com there did you check for engine speed/rpm signal inside the block values?

The crank/engine speed sensor is on the bottom of the engine right behind and right of the oil filter canister. It will lead up to a light grey connector
