Timing chain kit: http://www.germanautoparts.com/Volkswagen/Corrado/Engine/274/2
Complete head gasket set:  http://www.germanautoparts.com/Volkswagen/Corrado/Engine/100/2
or the bare minimum gaskets needed: http://www.germanautoparts.com/Volkswagen/Corrado/Engine/102/2
Bentley: http://www.germanautoparts.com/Books/Volkswagen/Corrado
If you do the chains it's a good idea to do the clutch too since you have to pull it off. Reusing a clutch is like reusing a condom: http://www.germanautoparts.com/Volkswagen/Corrado/Clutch/55/2

To just change the cams it looks like you'll be spending $130ish plus the cam price. To do it right it looks more like $500-700 plus your cams, but I would expect you'll have to dump that into the car soon anyways for basic maintenance. Chains seem to last forever, but the plastic tensioners suck monkey balls. For example; I have a buddy that owns a 2001 VR GTI with 70k miles on it, and it developed a pretty severe oil leak one day. We couldn't exactly see where it was coming from but we knew it was around the upper chain cover. When we disassembled it we found that all of the plastic guides had grenaded and the chain was using the cover as a guide and that caused a hole to appear in it. We also found that all of the plastic bits and pieces were clogging the oil pump pickup screen, which was causing a random low oil pressure light we'd been trying to find. ::)

So, be sure and set aside the money for chains and a clutch because I'm 90% certain you'll need it. I have yet to see a used VR that had remotely usable guides.

that must be a rare scenario in a 12v VR.  i took a look at the old guides that came out of mine when my timing chains were done (gabe did mine at 80k miles) and they looked almost brand new.  very little wear on them.  what could cause them to wear differently?

Also I imagine if one starts to wear it is probably a quick process until it needs replaced.  The small grooves turn into big grooves super quickly.

Break out the tape measure, and convert whatever measurement you get into MM.
