Wheel thread, no enkei's contained within.
« on: July 29, 2009, 06:46:19 PM »

Ok guys, so i managed to almost kill myself last week during that ultra bad hailstorm on north powers.  Luckily i didn't hit anyone or anything, but i did go skidding into the center median of grass/etc at about 55mph.  As far as i can tell i only damage one of the wheels, the tire won't hold air, and i can't find any holes with the soapy water test, the air appears to be leaking at the bead.

Anyways, that being said, i may actually have to replace the wheel, if i do, i'm probably just gonna get 4x new wheels rather than try to repair/replace these huffs.  Unfortunately budget is going to be limited, so no CH's for me :-(.

Was curious what you guys thought of:

Edit: Just thought i should mention for anyone who doesn't know or has forgotten, i drive a Black MKV GTI 2dr.  It has Euro Spec springs on it, so its about .75" lower than a normal GTI.

ASA GT1 18x8 Silver:

(i'm leaning towards this option:
ASA GT1 Black with red pinstripe:

Rial Como:

Maybe stretch budget a bit for BBS CO:

Any other options you guys have that i dont know about would be cool too.

Although i've seen A8L reps look fantastic on certain cars, they're just too damned heavy of a wheel.  If i remember correctly they're something on the order of 32-33lbs?

RS6 reps are an idea i hadn't tossed around.  I also forgot about B6 RS4 reps too.

Hmm, dunno how heavy they are. I know that A8L's are flat, and the ones in that picture curve into the center so I actually have no idea what wheels those are, but that look would be pretty nasty on a mark 5 IMO.  B6 Rs4's are always good, hell even B7 Rs4's look pretty neat.  I've just never liked new school mesh style on a MK5 unless its CH's, although the black GT1's would be quite sharp.

You're going to have to change the title of the thread now..... ;D

Seriously though, I like the way the black RS6 wheels look on it. Also the black ASA wheels with the red stripe are kinda cool too.

I'd say look for some Merc rims. I've seen some on the local craigs list in the 17-18" variety for decent prices with tires. Stay away from the black with red stripe, they're played on black mkvs. My car is one of the few I've seen without black rims with a red pinstripe.

Seriously? I havent seen a single car in town with black w/red pinstripes.  Hell, i've only ever seen 2 other black MKV GTI's.

That would really suck balls if it became the new *fad*, i've been wanting to do that since the day i purchased this car.  Really i've been wanting to do it to a car after i saw an old members black A3 with black wheels w/red pinstripe, it was unbelievably hot.

Echo?  ;D

There was a black GTI at the old nissan dealer on academy & bijou that had it. I've even seen a couple in Denver with them. I've found that if a mkv gti/gli has non oem rims they usually have black ones with a red strip.

Here's some merc wheels to browse through.

Well shit, it seems like i've been out of the loop too long.  Hell i remember when me and Jimmy Dean were the only ones who had MKV's, now i guess you got a crapton o' people eh.

Damnit, this blows, i really wanted to have blacked out wheels with a red pinstripe, but if its that played out i'd rather not look like a tool.

I guess its just stick with the ole' silver wheels.

and i have to admit, it doesn't look as good in RL as i imagined in mah head.  Especially since those are the CH's i always wanted in that manner.

Welp, looks like i no longer have an excuse to buy new wheels.  Took mine down to C&P Hubcap and Wheel to have them repair a bent wheel, which according to the dealer was not allowing the bead to seat properly, where Paul then discovered that the leak was because of a crapton of dirt crammed inbetween the wheel bead and the tire.  A few seconds with an air hose and a hand towel to whipe the dirt away and bam, tire holds air fine.

So, saved me money, which is great.  But no new wheels for me :(, at least in the near future.

::) geeZ.  All the excitement for nothing.

I know, needless to say i was both pissed, bummed, and happy, all at the same time.

Pissed because the dealer either A. Lied to me, or B. Is incompetent, both of which are not good, especially considering the alternative is shitberger.

Bummed because i was finally going to get aftermarket wheels.

Happy because i can't really afford new wheels atm anyways.

Sounds more like it was something that couldn't be seen unless the tire was dismounted. A bunch of dirt in the bead would throw it way out of balance and give the perception of a bend in the rim as well.

Thats the thing.  The day before they held it overnight, i talked to him and he told me that they had dismounted and remounted the tire, as they "had nothing to lose by trying it".  If they had done that there is no way in hell they could have not noticed the dirt, i saw it within seconds of the tire being broken off the bead.

Thats the thing.  The day before they held it overnight, i talked to him and he told me that they had it fixed, because after they couldnt find any leaks or punctures, they decided to dismount and remount the tire, as they "had nothing to lose by trying it". He told me about 430pm on thursday afternoon that the tire was fine and holding air.  After he called me the next morning they had come in and it was flat.  That was when they told me that it was a bent wheel causing it not to hold air.

If they had done actually dismounted the tire, there is no way in hell they could have not noticed the dirt, i saw it within seconds of the tire being broken off the bead.
