I've been pretty satisfied with the Royal Purple in the past, I've heard good things bout Amsoil, maybe it the new oil hotness, and i think it's a bit cheaper..  thanx anyways

yeah... I am an Amsoil nutswinger myself... switched over to it on all 4 of my cars, and love it.... engine noise decreased on all 4 motors (5.0L, Toyota 3.4L, VR, and 2.0L 16V)

You can buy it from the guy in Fountain, or Milehigh, or you can PM Juan (RSR32) since he has a good hookup.... or you can just buy the dealer license from Amsol for like $35, and then get everything to your door for a discounted price for a year....

you know how i stand dude amsoil has beat out many of the top oils in an independent test but dont take my word for it its all there and the thing about rp is i went on their web page and couldnt find any test data out side of the guys on hot rod tv saying its good, amsoil its proven to you in the specs dude we have seen 10% millage in every car we have it in so millage means less friction which is also more power, plus its nice changing my oil every 7500 miles with the mobil 1 filter. and as far as filters mobil 1 and k&n are 10 to 12 micron the amsoil is like 12 to 15 and fram is like 30 ish. if you want I'll see if i can find where that amsoil test was or im sure it on their web page good luck dude

there were some studies on the RP website a few years ago, they're not there any more?  I've been torn between RP (has been my first choice) and Lucas.

ahhh... I think I found out why... RP got challanged that the only info on their website was customer "testimonial" and no actual scientific tests, AND, false claims to be "API/ILSAC Certified"

I can help you out with the Amsoil.  I sell it and I will give it to your for my cost.  Amsoil has several different 5w40 oils.  Make, model, year and motor would help.  I can see what they recommend.

Or if you have a specific Amsoil oil in mind, let me know.

interesting... Oil Analysis reports for Mobile 1 5-30 and Amsoil 5-30:
http://neptune.spacebears.com/cars/stories/mobil1.html
http://neptune.spacebears.com/cars/stories/amsoil.html

For those of us with "aged" motors... Amsoil has 20% more zinc than Mobile1, according to these tests, Zinc is a friction modifier and a "good" thing for us

Ive run Mobil 1 in my GTI since I got it. Nothin against Amsoil, but Im perfectly happy w/ my mobil 1. It does just fine, and considering I change the oil in my car once a year (it really only sees 5K max in that year) it seems like a waste of money to go w/ the more expensive stuff (amsoil).

if you read the reports on the two.. they are about neck and neck, the Amsoil really shined on the longer change interval.  The extra Zinc in Amsoil is a definate anit-wear bonus, especially if you like to romp on the engine :)

Yeah I read it and the funny thing is I dont put that many miles on mine in a year so where the amsoil shined, I wouldn't really be using it.  That article also said the oil was getting thicker w/ the amsoil, so the weight was changing from the 5w30 to 5/40, then 15w40 or something like that. I run 10w30 in my vr and dont want it getting thicker as it will cause more heat (vr's already run hot enough!)
Lastly, mobil 1 is listed on the vw approved motor oil list for the vr6 engine, where as amsoil is not. Not that my car has warranty anymore but vw kept the additives and cleaners in mind when approving/recommending a specific oil.

Again, nothing against amsoil, it seems like a good oil, but for an off the shelf synthetic.. mobil 1 works just fine for me. Ive used it for many years, and from everything I read, I'll continue to use it.

I understand the "off the shelf" sentiment, and being "VW Spec'd for the VR6", I'm only slightly weary of the lack of specific additives in Mobile1 proven to extend the life of flat tappet engines.  The only oils that Mobile Spec's for the earlier VW engines isn't even synthetic, its their "MobileClean" line of traditional oils, and even they are lacking friction modifiers

reguardless, i'll take a group IV (ams) over a group III (mobile) any day.

mobile 1 is fine if you're changing at short intervals (3 or 5k) but in my experience costs as much or more than amsoil.

also, amsoil is vw cert for 502.00, 505.00, 505.01.

call that dude, then just roll out to his house and get your shit, the other thing i read the other day was that the k&n oil filter uses a resin to get to the 10 to 12 micron leave, so people were having trouble burning up oil pumps, cause your trying to suck it through that resin

If you want "real" oil filtration... buy a Canton Oil Filter... 8 micron filtration cartridges and last 3x longer than our spin-ons ;)

Group I base stocks are composed of fractionally distilled petroleum which is further refined with solvent extraction processes to improve certain properties such as oxidation resistance and to remove wax.

Group II base stocks are composed of fractionally distilled petroleum that has been hydrocracked to further refine and purify it.

Group III base stocks are composed of fractionally distilled petroleum that has been hydrocracked to further refine and purify it. Group III base stocks have higher viscosity indexes. Group III base stocks are produced by further hydrocracking of Group II base stocks, or of hydroisomerize d slack wax, (a byproduct of the dewaxing process).

Group IV base stock are polyalphaolefi ns (PAOs).

in many countries it isn't permitted to market mobile 1 (a Group III) oil a synthetic, because its a blatant lie..... why mobile 1 can charge more for an oil that isnt a true synthetic, i'm not sure.

interesting... III is just "premium of the premium" mineral based oils?  Where as normal "conventional" oils are II or I?  How does Mobile1 get away with calling themself a "synthetic"?

How do you find out what group they are?  Does it say so on the bottle?

Amsoil is not certified by VW. It probably would pass all of the tests, but Amsoil won't pay VW for the certification process.

I've attached the most recent approved oil list from VWoA if anyone's interested

looking right now... its apparently the API (who makes the certifications for oil) that keeps the "list"/breakdown of Groups:
More Wiki info:
Quote
Groups I and II are commonly referred to as mineral oils, group III is typically referred to as synthetic (except in Germany and Japan, where they must not be called synthetic) and group IV is a synthetic oil. Group V base oils are so diverse that there is no catch-all description.

having no luck finding a "list", it appears that API wants to "sell" their data and not make it publicly available

Well, they are not 505.01 certified.

FTR the testing process costs around $2,000,000 total when it is all said and done.  That is the biggest reason Amsoil will not pay for it.  It is easy for Exxon/Mobil, ELF, etc to pay this money, they are huge companies, amsoil is not.  Amsoil does warranty their oil.  If it causes a problem, they will cover the repair, of course there are stipulations, you must have the oil tested, etc....

In my PD TDI (requires 505.01) I have ran, Motul, Elf, Castrol and Amsoil.  Amsoil tested better than all of them.  i will see if I can find my UOA's for each.

If you want "real" oil filtration... buy a Canton Oil Filter... 8 micron filtration cartridges and last 3x longer than our spin-ons ;)
http://www.cmfilters.com/remote.cfm

These do not "filter 8 microns".  They filter DOWN to 8 microns.  Big difference.

They sound like great filter but I really don't know enough about them to comment any further.  I don't see any test results on their site.  These filters are also "remote system" meaning it is secondary system.  When adding a secondary system, make sure you can maintain oil pressure at proper levels.

not trying to be biased but the Amsoil EaA filters are tough to beat:
http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/eao.aspx

Filters 15 microns at 98.7% efficiency, that is the best for an OEM replacement filter on the market.

I noticed that that flag and fireworks place by A1 had an Amsoil dealer sticker on the front of the building.

I have some Royal Purple at my house that I will sell to someone. I not sure how many I have but I'm not going to use them. Send me a PM if your interested and I can let you know how many I have and what I'll let them go for.
